2020.07.27 15:18 Army_Bot Summary For: Weekly Question Thread (7/20/2020 to 7/26/2020)

I want to become an 18D or a 68W and hopefully go into the rangers, so my question is how would I go about enlisting to do either of these, and also are the 18D’s trained more than 68W or is it the same training?

I'm a 17 year old girl who's really interested in EOD. Won't graduate high school until I'm halfway to 19, so I don't want to waste a recruiters time or anything since I can't do anything yet. Perfectly healthy, I do soccer and track for activities, the only medical concern was breaking my leg freshman year. I don't have any lingering health effects, but I do have some hardware in it.
I do have a few questions.
1.) Everything I've read online says that EOD is open to women. Probably not the most knowledgeable source in the world, despite his high opinion of himself, my dad spent 4 years active duty way before I came around. He's absolutely certain that women aren't allowed to do "EOD" EOD, but can do "EOD support". That sounds like bullshit to me, but I wanted to get the actual truth since online is...online and I don't think 4 years of infantry from the mid 90s is the best source for current information. I know the school's hard and long as hell, so if I make it through that I'd want to be doing EOD things, not just supporting the people doing EOD things.
2.) I'm in good shape, tried to do an ACFT myself to see what I'd be in for. Deadlift is deadlifting, yeeting a ball over your head is whatever, the sprint-drag-carry thing is something almost identical to what we do in soccer so that's easy. And I run for fun so 2 miles isn't anything hard.
I've seen multiple ways online, when it comes to the pushups, is it just break contact with the ground, or do you have to do the thing where you make a "T" with your body?
And I'm still sucking at the leg tuck thing. I can consistently do like 1 or 2 of them, but that's like max effort and not very easy. Any advice on that would be awesome.
3.) I was looking at information about basic, and I know you're pretty much given all the clothes you're allowed to wear. What's the deal when it comes to sports bras? I have a few certain ones that work for me, but I'm...a few steps past "really big" in the chest region. Working out without those is doable but sucks massive monkey balls, so it would be cool if I got to keep them.
tldr
My Googling isn't as good as what I thought it was, thought I'd ask the smart people. Just found out there was an Army reddit recently.

Question about Tri-Care: Shipping to Jackson 8/4, (AD, 35P, E-4) married and wondering when my wife will get Tri-Care. I know zero week is mostly in-processing and stuff, but she’s losing her insurance through her parent 7/31 (he left his job) and with COVID cases ramping up in the state she’ll be while I’m at BCT, I want to know if it takes a while for dependents to be insured or if it’s pretty quick. I did give her power of attorney so she can handle administrative stuff easier.

I’m 21 years old and I’ve been applying for jobs for awhile now with no luck. Unfortunately this means I still have to live with my dad. Something is up with my dad he barely eats and will not buy food for the house for the past few weeks I’ve been eating rice with pasta sauce on it and bananas. I am just in a terrible situation and I am thinking about going in to the military but I constantly feel faint and I don’t know if I will pass the physical exams. I just want to have a life and it feels like the only way I will get that is if I join the military. I know if I had fuel and some strength to pass the exam I can but with the lack of food I don’t even have the energy to do a couple of push ups or work out. Not sure if this thread is still up but any guidance or tips will be appreciated

I asked this on /SecurityClearance but didn't get an answer. I'm at language school and want to use an online speaking tutoring service with a foreign national. Is this something that could complicate my TS? Would I have to report this as a foreign contact, even if I don't share my personal information, never meet the person offline, and don't connect on any social media platforms?

Thanks

I dropped out of college prior to the coming into the army with only a semester left - 5 credit hours - to graduate. Let’s ignore the excuses and finger pointing for a second now. Okay, so... i want to finish my degree and finally go OCS, but recently I was told that I could apply for OCS even without my degree being complete. Are there any SMEs over here that can confirm/deny this claim with some regulation to back it up?
On subject of my procrastination, I did reapply to by old college regardless. Figured it was time to put my money where my my mouth is.

What's a good MOS available in the Army Reserves that would make it easier to go Active if needed? Like recession insurance.
Not sure how it works but I imagine some MOS are a dime a dozen on Active but some might always be in demand both on Active and the Reserves. It seems like a catch-22 but surely there something.

Current 1LT commissioned 2018, finished IBOLC early 2019, finished Ranger summer of 2019, have airborne and air assault completed. I was supposed to go to 2BCT Campbell, my original RFO back in Fall of 2018 said "0502 IN BN 101", but my new RFO says "02 0101 IN HEADQUARTERS". Does this mean that I've been switched from a line battalion to brigade headquarters?
I'm already 2 years into service having spent the entire time in TRADOC at Benning because I had surgery which I wasn't allowed to PCS during, and then right after I healed from that and was about to PCS Coronavirus hit and had us all halted here for now almost 4 months. I just really don't want to get to my unit and sit on BDE staff for years and end up not serving any time as a PL since that's the whole reason I did this infantry officer gig in the first place..

I'm currently waiting on getting consultations done and have been waiting for my consultations (i need 2, one of which for a waiver as i'm currently DQed) for almost two months. Is there any reason why it's taken so long for Meps to actually schedule doctor's visits? I actually went to meps a second time for one of my doctor's visits and it was canceled (i didn't find this out until i was taken to the consultation and waited 2 hours+sleeping the night before). My recruiter doesn't contact me anymore, and my 1st consult was canceled on 4 seperate occassions. Is my recruiter trying to get me to drop my enlistment?

I’m married and decided to sell my current car because it was pretty unreliable and didn’t want to add more shit onto my wife’s plate while I was gone.
I’m coming in as prior service from another branch but spent my whole time single in the barracks, so this is new territory for me. Thanks.

How many times can you change your MOS?
I know that many MOSs have age, TIS/TIG requirements. Assuming you meet those requirements at what point does a recruiter tell you no more switching?
For instance, I am a 20yr old reservist, my contract will be up in 2024. I am looking to go SF, but I wanted to go active for a contract before going through selection.
If I were go go active and change my MOS, would I be able to change it again if I did go SF?

Current Navy E5, 9 years in with 17 months until EAOS. Already am FTS (our version of Active Guard, babysit selres, DTS, push orders, am Logistics, and Security Forces Qualed)
Am thinking about going Active Guard. How is it? Im assuming I’d have to go to basic again, but would I keep rank as an E5? How would that work?
How is being a Natty Light? And perks or disadvantages?
Wouldnt mind staying Logistics, but also am open to trying something new, but I guess when would be an ideal time to talk to a Recruiter?

So I leave for BCT on Monday. I will be joining as 68W. I was wondering which bases everyone recommends for outdoor activities such as hiking and camping? I know Fort Carson is popular for that, but I’d also like other options. Europe and the Pacific isn’t ruled out, but I think I’d rather stay state-side for my first contract. Unless you feel so strongly about a base overseas.
Also any tips and tricks for BCT would be appreciated.

So, I know a SFC at my unit who recently got a DUI. The weird part of this situation is the last couple months he has been going around telling anyone who would listen that he had a severe problem with alcohol including our command team. Around a month ago he self enrolled in SUDDC but because of covid, he could not go to inpatient rehab. He was also told by his therapist not to stop drinking because quitting cold Turkey cant literally kill an alcoholic. So he couldnt start the program. Has anyone ever seen something like this?
EDIT I know how everyone feels about drunk drivers here lol. Not to give away his personal shit but the guy had some really horrific shit happen to him this past year. Also he knows he is fucked lol I just think it sucks for him

Hey guys, need some help, I got a 90 on the ASVAB and I'm trying to choose my MOS since pretty much everything is open to me.
My top choices are 42A or 68F
Anyone here in that currently? I want to hear the good, bad, everything. Also like where would I likely go to AIT etc. I'm married and I've heard that if AIT is longer than 12 weeks our spouses move with? Is that true?
More info,
42A, Human Resources, it's pretty much what I already do civilian without the army. I'm comfortable with it. If I do this while in, I'll go to college, get an actual degree, I might not be overly excited by it, but I'd be comfortable.
68F, Physical Therapy, while I'm comfortable with human resources type work, I'm honestly interested in this MOS more, it would be completely new, and something that I would go to school for while in to build a career in not only in the army but after.
Also, for those saying Join the AirForce, it was my first choice but they don't like that I have a GED despite my scores. I could probably get in, but it would take much longer....

Warrant Officer route...
Hey guys, I’ve seen that the army is the only branch that if you want to fly you don’t need a bachelors. I want to go straight into the program, but the recruiter is saying to do a 3-4 year contract then apply for warrant officer. The reason being it’s harder going straight into it(their words not mine). Recruiter has also stated since I’ll already be in the Army, I would have already built a well rounded reputation with my fellow NCO’s and Officers to pass me into flight school. The reason being is because according to the recruiter, they will see my hard work ethic goes into completely to the Army. Are they pulling my chain? If not then I’ll do avionics then for any of their aircraft.

I got hardware retention on both of my legs and feet. Titanium spacers. I could get surgery to remove them since they have already shaped my feet to have an arch. But, I just want to get some people's experience on something similar. Still gonna bring this up with a recruiter either way once I can enlist.

So I’ve been dealing with shin splints since I first came in (about a year and a half ago) and it’s due to having flat feet. I’ve tried almost every option and I still have the issue.
I’m pretty fast, the only issue is I can’t even get through the prep drills without pain so I damn sure can’t run that long without stopping. So I’ve hit a wall with my runtime. And I DONT want get a profile even tho I’ve been suggested it, but I might have to.
I had the chance to go Airborne but had to change my mind because of this. Am I going to miss out on a lot career-wise by not being able to run?

Been out 6 years now (Reserves) and trying to get my RPU for a VA Loan (DD-214 isn't enough, apparently). ArmyHRC portal won't let anyone on a non-DoD computer connect to it. I went to a recruiter to use their computer since I have a DS Logon (No CAC, unfortunately) and the HRC portal just sent me on a loop. Tells me to log in, I log in, then it tells me to log in again, repeat infinitely.
Would my old unit still have these records? Any other way anyone can think of to access them? The only thing I can find is going through the My Records Portal on HRC.

I’ve created my TSP account and have accessed it but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to move my money around. Currently everything is sitting in the G fund and I’d like to move it to another faster growing fund or a life cycle fund (haven’t decided where yet open to suggestions) but there isn’t an obvious way to do it, no buy or sell option, no transfer funds or anything, it just keeps telling my I have $100 and 100% of my money allocated to the G fund. Any directions on how to use the website would be greatly appreciated.

Primarily, what kind of experience should I expect during drill and annual training? And during my time enlisted as a whole?
Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Question about initial-entry active duty 37F:
1) I just started working with a recruiter and he stated that it is only for reserves/NG as initial entry off the street. The Army's website and few threads here seem to indicate otherwise. Is he correct or is his info just outdated?
2) Do Psyop candidates still go through 31B OSUT? A search of this sub indicates they did/do, but the requirements page from the Army's website does not mention it.
3) Where does Airborne school slot into the training pipeline?

Current active duty air force. Let's say I have orders to a base in JBSA. My spouse is looking to enlist in the army (long story). When she goes to basic training / AIT, will the army work with us to send her over to a base in JBSA (Lackland, Sam Houston) since I got orders here? Or would the army just not give a shit and send her anywhere for her first base? The MOS she's thinking of can go to both of those bases.
Any insight on how the process works is welcome.

Hey guys,
So I'm a recent college grad from a top 30 university with a dual degree in PoliSci and Economics interested in joining the Army. Over the last year of school I applied to a shit ton of entry level intel positions in both the public and private space, but due to my lack of foreign language training and not being at the top of my class, none of them panned out. I've been working with a recruiter for about a month now searching for the right role and currently have a temporary reservation for a 37F, 5 year contract. From everything I've read about Psyops, it seems right up my alley due to my affinity for language, talking to people, tough physical training, and everything psychological. I was originally looking for an 18x contract after speaking with a few former berets, but there are no available contracts at the current moment and after reading more about psyops I think I'm more interested in that route. I've spoken to my recruiter about going to OCS, but he says it could take up to a year to get there, and as I'm not exactly looking for a long term military career, I would rather enlist and expedite my training. We have also spoken about 35L 11x40 contracts, to work in counter intel with a ranger regiment, among some other 35 series roles. Basically, I'm looking to be deployed and get some real hands on work in the field. Just wondering if you guys have any suggestions, or if there are any former 37F's that would be willing to chat with me privately. I know there's a megathread already, but I have some questions that weren't answered there. Got a 97 AFQT score and 132 on my GT if that helps. Thanks.

Also I saw online some "military housing" from The Parks at Monterrey and was wondering if the housing was chosen for you and that I would not receive BAH because of it?
Is the housing recommended for someone whom is E4 or should i look for non- military housing?
Also thank you all on Army for helping me through the process!

Chances of getting into regiment without an opt 40? Asked around and what I’ve gathered up is getting invited to RASP at osut or airborne can happen but is rare and once you get assigned to a unit it’s almost impossible because they won’t “release you”. I have an 11x contract which I’d imagine is one of the most popular mos in the regiment so not many spots would be open.

Just went and spoke to recruiter today. Have mildish eczema. He recommended I do not mention it to MEPS. He says that if they decided I did have eczema, medical documents from my allergist would be needed and then I can get the waiver but to expedite things I should not mention it. What are the odds waivers get accepted? I would rather not lie and get the waiver but also do not want to DQ and strike my record.

Hello, I’m 23 yrs old and currently a nationally registered Advanced EMT that works on a hotshot crew with an associates degree and relatively physically fit with much room for improvement due to lack of consistency because of my job (sub 8min miles for 7+ miles at a time, 15-20 strict pull-ups, 80 push-ups in a minute and a half, solid hiker with lots of weight). I was curious as to what kind of contracts are typically offered given the previous training I have in combination with my pt scores. I’ve talked to a recruiter but he was unsure about people with civilian training prior to enlistment. Because it is fire season and I’m typically gone from home for 2-3 weeks at a time, I haven’t gotten a chance to go in and talk more with him. Just curious what kind of info I can get here. I also have an interest in being attached with rangers or a medevac ship enlisting as a 68W.

I'm currently in the Air Force as an E6->E7. Our OTS (OCS) program is EXTREMELY difficult to get into with a 2%-26% selection rate. I've talked to a couple recruiters that said OCS selection rates are very high and could get me in without much issue. I would do ROTC for grad school if needed.
I plan to finish out and retire in whichever branch. I qualify for all aspects except age/TAFMS which can be waived according to the recruiters.
Has anyone here done this or have any thoughts?

Iam thinking about Joining the national guard after I get my associates degree, would I be able to choose college first option and go on to attend college to get my bachelor's?
Or would the college first option been nullified as it states "Graduate from HS or Senior" (I think this means only if right out of HS and have completed 4 years college or required amount of credits to be a senior.
Recap- would I still be able to choose college first?

Im planning on enlisting with the Army, and most likely going reserve. I'm trying to get an Intel MOS (35 series) and I wanted to know what states have Intel units? My recruiter told me if I go reserve as Intel I'd have to move because my state doesn't have any reserve units with Intel, so if that's true, then what states do?
Also, if I wanted to reapply for scholarship while in the reserve how would I go about it? Previously I had a Marine scholarship, however due to eyesight and the Corps strictness I was dropped, but after speaking with the Army officer in charge of the ROTC scholarships at my university she said in my case Army would most likely take me.

So I'm interested in joining either the army or air force around Spring 2021 as my current job contract will be up.
I'm 25, F, and extremely bright. I like the 35 series of jobs. Both AF and army have crypto linguist.
I'm still waiting to here back from recruiters in Japan. (Holiday weekend).
Not sure if it helps but, I did 10 months of Americorps NCCC FEMA Corps.
How safe is it now for women in the army/military in general? I know the airforce has a buddy system now. I've read all kinds of horror stories.
I know this is hard to answer because every situation is different. But, how long would it take applying now, to get a potential ship out date in that 35 series?
I'm going about studying for the asvab now. I took it once in highschool. How else can I prepare?
In PT more difficult now or?
Is there certain jobs I should know about that are less risky on a daily basis such the 35s?
How can I prepare physically?

I’m thinking about enlisting in the army as a 68W. I scored a 87 on my PICAT and currently just have to go up to verify it. What are some of the pros and cons to taking this path that I might not be aware of, and what are some other MOS’s that I should look into?

Okay, so... i want to finish my degree and finally go OCS, but recently I was told that I could apply for OCS even without my degree being complete.

How is being a Natty Light? And perks or disadvantages?

Unless you feel so strongly about a base overseas.

I’m pretty fast, the only issue is I can’t even get through the prep drills without pain so I damn sure can’t run that long without stopping. So I’ve hit a wall with my runtime. And I DONT want get a profile even tho I’ve been suggested it, but I might have to.

Thanks.

Student Loan Repayment question.
I joined in 2007 and my contract had a clause that offered 20k student loan repayment, but I never used it. My IRR officially ended 2015. Only a few short weeks after I was fully out I decided I wanted to join back up, but that was a very brief stint and I was discharged for medical reasons.
My question is: Will my clause still be honored after all of this?

2020.07.22 19:06 Natalicious-Keto Email Update from The Kevins of IMMI regarding their Low Carb Ramen + Broth Product Development - give them some LOVE! I can't wait for this product to launch!!!

I just simply cut and paste the email update I received from IMMI, below! Good Stuff! I hope they are successful in their creation and I am totally down to try it! And btw, I'm not doing this for the sweepstakes mentioned at the tail end. I want some Ramen!!! Nat
Hey everyone 👋, it's getting sunnier ☀️ these days and it's so hard to resist going outside! We hope you've all been staying safe and are finding time to cook and try new foods at home!
Over the past few months, we've been hard at work iterating on our immi ramen formulation with our food scientists, chefs, and manufacturers.
We recently celebrated our 1 year immiversary and we wanted to give all of you an update on what's been going on with our product behind the scenes. Some of you who are in our private beta community have already heard about some of these updates and we'd love for more of you to join our community!
Prepare yourselves because this is going to be one awesome noodle strand of an update!

Broth Update:

During our early conversations with seasoning manufacturers, we carefully evaluated the tradeoffs between a dry vs. a liquid based broth.
After trying flavors using both methods and reviewing the options with our PhD food scientist and chef, we've decided to move forward with a dry powder broth, which we know many of you will be happy about 🙌!
We're working with one of Japan's largest and oldest seasoning manufacturers who produces broths for many of the world's largest instant ramen makers 🍜. While we can't say who they are, we can say you've likely had their broths at some point in your life.
Unlike traditional ramen brands, we're working with our manufacturer to use cleaner ingredients 🌱. We've vetted 🧐 each ingredient and while many are more expensive to use, we believe they contribute to a delicious and healthier nutritional profile for our broths 👍.
We'll be announcing our starting flavors as we get closer to launch and we can't wait to tell you what they are!

Noodle Update:

Over the past year, we've created over 250 formulation versions of our immi ramen noodles. We've tried our noodles in all sorts of shapes and forms: fresh, air dried, deep-fried, and even baked 😂.
Most traditional instant ramen brands deep fry their noodles in unhealthy oils 🙅‍♂️ to prevent contamination from water moisture and to increase shelf life.
But we always felt that nothing could beat the taste of a fresh cut ramen noodle that didn't have to be dehydrated and then re-hydrated again.
We 🧠 asked ourselves if there were any way to keep our ramen noodles in their natural form while ensuring that they could stay fresh without refrigeration.
After several months of independent research and meetings with food scientists, we decided on one of the most traditional techniques used in food for centuries: acidification.
Endless amounts of familiar foods that you eat every single day are acidified like jelly, ketchup, mayonnaise, pickles, canned green beans, green olives, etc... If you've ever opened an instant udon bowl, you'll see fresh udon noodles in clear vacuum sealed packaging that have been acidified.
After months of investigation and tests, we found a way to incorporate this process to keep our immi noodles fresh with a better surface texture and bite, while still lasting for months without any need for refrigeration.
The acidification process does come with trade-offs as food science has its limits!
Our fresh ramen noodles come with a light tangy note - almost as if someone squeezed a few drops of fresh lemon juice onto them 🍋.
We've counter-balanced this by adjusting our dry broth with complementary flavor notes so the entire package pairs wonderfully with a delicious taste 😋 when microwaved together in water.

Nutrition Update:

From a nutritional standpoint, we received some awesome feedback from our beta community - thank you to everyone who has participated in our surveys and polls!
🥖 Net Carbs: Slightly increased to 10g (noodle + broth combined). This change improved our noodle surface texture and bite and still keeps us up to 75% lower in net carbs than other traditional brands.
💪 Protein: Slightly reduced to the 34-36g range. This is equivalent to a 4oz piece of chicken breast, 5oz piece of steak, or 1 block of firm tofu.
🥦 Fiber: Slightly increased to the 8-10g range. This is equivalent to 70 almonds, 2.5 cups of cooked spinach, or 4 cups of broccoli.
immi is going to be a delicious 😋, nutritious, low-carb, high-protein, high-fiber, keto-friendly, plant-based crave-satisfying meal and we're excited for you to taste it.
Although we've gone through 250+ iterations to get to where we are, this is just the beginning with our v1.0 launch in a few months. Even after our initial launch, we'll be working tirelessly behind the scenes with our food scientists and chefs to bring you new and improved versions of immi.

Launch Date:

Speaking of launch, we've gotten so many e-mails from many of you eagerly asking where you can purchase immi and when we'll be launched 🚀.
Normally, we'd be on-site with our manufacturers iterating in person. However, due to COVID-19 😷, all food manufacturers are enforcing strict safety protocols and preventing non-essential personnel from entering.
As a work around, we've been shipping 📬 samples of noodles and seasoning back and forth every week and giving feedback remotely.
Barring any setbacks, we're aiming to launch by early winter of this year 🎉.
Thank you all for being so patient with us and for taking a chance on joining our famimmi 🙏. We can't wait to enrich your lives with immi 🍜!

Can You Do Us a Huge Favor?

While you polish up your ramen bowls, we'd love to ask two favors from all of you that would mean the world to us:
1/ Can you respond to this email and tell us a bit more about yourself and why you're interested in immi ramen? We're trying to learn as MUCH as we can about you so that we can serve the best possible immi ramen for you.
2/ Forward this to a friend who you think would enjoy immi ramen when we launch! Optionally, for every friend you forward this to, send a screenshot of the e-mail and reply to this e-mail with it. For each screenshot, we'll give you one extra entry in our sweepstake to win a free year of immi ramen.
With overflowing bowls of love 🍜,
👨‍🍳 The Kevins 👨‍🍳

In the process of enlisting. Passed my physical and 90 on the ASVAB, I have my 4-year degree and am looking at what MOS to select, given availability of course. I’m on a waiver for a discharge from ROTC in college, luckily didn’t have to lay anything back but I was a shit head cadet, and all my record states was misconduct—underage drinking, not showing up to PT, etc, obviously life and mentality has changed.
Not sure what all info is relevant but degree is in journalism, minor in sociology focus on nationalism and political terrorism—formal wording.
I’ve worked as a reporter, editor-in-chief at a medical magazine, design agencies and managed private clients on my own etc
Initially I was, still am, thinking to go 46Q. Of course the Army is different, but I figure the bread and butter of shooting, interviewing and writing is what I’ll know having reported on Ft. Stewart and Hunter when I was in Savannah.
Little background if relevant, I am familiar with army/military life being a dependent (dad is still active LTC at CentCom and is infantry), Spanish fluency being Panamanian born-US citizen by birth, very basic Arabic language skills but told by natives have an Iranian accent when speaking, did not pass the DLAB( because that was easily the most ridiculous test I’ve ever seen in my life hah), and am 28 physically fit and capable. I’m just interested in gaining more perspective from others. Recruiters and the station give some insight when I ask about their regular duty and what they would choose but figure you all may be a bit more frank and not trying to sell me—given it makes no difference to you hah.
My question is, availability aside, what MOS’s would you all consider and advise? Are there lifespans for a waiver—like if I don’t sign by X date then it’ll expire and have to reapply?
Thanks in advance!

I just got back from talking to my recruiter and he said I shouldn't go option 40. I plan on enlisting as a 68W and I really want to go to RASP and try for getting into the 75th. From what I've seen here people say there's little to no chance of getting into the 75th if you don't go in with an option 40.
Any personal advice here? I'll be 18 when I attend basic so this will be my first enlistment (I'm sure you can tell.)

How can you find out if you get student loan repayment when you enlist with the army?
Is there some website you can look up the benefits you got in your contract?
I enlisted last year 2017 and I really can't remember if I got student loan repayment. Part of me vaguely remembers turning it down because at the time I did not have any student loan debt to pay off. I pray to god that's not the case because I'm about to go to college while in the USAR and I might need that.

I am 23 years old and looking to join the Army Reserve; I've always wanted to serve and this is the best way for me to do so and keep my girlfriend happy. I need help determining my chances of getting a medical waiver for a back injury I had as a kid. In 2005 I was in a vehicle hit by drunk driver and I spent two different stints home-bound in middle school wearing a molded back brace. However after the second brace(I was 13) the doctor cleared me for any and all physical activity. I played basketball in high school and have had physically demanding jobs since. If anyone that has anything to do with the medical waiver decision-making process would help me I would be greatly appreciative. Also I have retrieved my medical records already and confirmed the doctor's ruling.

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask but I've been an AIT soldier for nearly 8 months now and I'm receiving an Art. 15 for 'disrespect towards a senior comissioned officer'.
Shortened version is that I was corrected for a minor infraction (gave the wrong time of day in a greeting with a sergeant) by who'm I had thought was my physician, an officer, as they were walking past. I responded "Yes ma'am" and nothing came of it that morning. I'm now being threatened with a field grade article for failing to move to attention when I responded. Multiple officers have told me, including that day, that the clinic doesn't require formalities besides 'ma'am and 'sir' due to the climate it creates.
Is there anything I should know about before I get further into this? Thanks to anybody that answers. Really wish I didn't have to ask.

Graduating from college next semester with my BA, the plan is a Master's program and ROTC for a commission while doing SMP.
In regards to the training required for the summer before I would start ROTC and my master's program, how far in advance would I know what camp dates I would be assigned?
I would like to plan to secure a summer job before the dates to save up or possible a short term internship before or after the dates.
Is there still a 5k bonus for cadets to contract non scholarship? After taxes, about how much do SMP cadets take home after taxes from stipend and drill pay? Will SMP time count as TIG for pay later once commissioned? Will it also count towards retirement?
Thanks!

Hello, I was offered a contracting job overseas. It is in an allied country, but I am in the NG. We only have AF bases over in said country, no Army personnel I am immediately aware of. I am going to speak to my PSG/PL/CO about it at drill in approximately a week. They are already aware of it, just I find it easier to discuss these things real time than over emails. What are my options here? I don't want to get an OTH for not being to fly across the ocean once a month.
Ideally, if I could just do it with a unit over there (can I do it with an AF unit ?) Or do like a month long all-in-one-go drill if thats still a thing. Basically what are my options? How realistic are my expectations? Can my unit prevent me from taking this job (directly saying no, not being prohibitively uncooperative)?
Thanks.
E: Its a 2 year contract, btw.

Question about mental health waivers. But first, a back story.

Back in the 90s when I was in elementary school my parents put me through testing for ADHD. The psychologist said that I didn't have it, but he said I did show some signs of having Asperger Syndrome. My parents disagreed with his findings, doc respected their wishes to not have me branded as autistic and decided to not send me to be tested. Instead both sides agreed to a couple years of intermittent therapy sessions to work on some problems I was having in school and prescribed me some Ritalin (after taking it for a few days I had a negative reaction and was taken off immediately). Fast forward to today, I'm in my mid-20s and I personally don't believe I meet the diagnostic criteria. FWIW, at the time I was being tested there were so many kids being over-diagnosed with learning disorders because their parents and teachers couldn't control them or didn't want to deal with behavior that wasn't well understood at the time.

How would this affect me getting into the Army? I want to become an officer, and I know I'm going to have to discuss this with my recruiter as well as a MEPS doctor. I wouldn't be lying to anyone to say I was never diagnosed with a learning disordedisability, but I'd hate to think that it would be held against me just because I was suspected of having something that I probably never had.

After about a year and change of research and work, I’ve finally managed to get to MEPS for my physical and have my admin (moral? I dunno) waiver put through for approval. As of right now I’m still waiting on the “go” or “no-go”, but I feel like I’m going to get a call about it within the next 2 or 3 weeks. Either way, as the clock ticks closer towards all this, I’m getting somewhat antsy- I want to take an 11x contract, with an option 4 if I’m able. I’m just wondering if the 11x contract is typically available nowadays, because I seem to get mixed answers on this one. I know the fiscal year just started which I guess means jobs have opened up again that previously were closed, but I’m just wondering about how likely it is I’ll be able to sign up to be a full time army janitor and part time bullet sponge, assuming my waiver gets approved within the next month or so.
On top of that I wonder how likely it would be for me to snag an airborne school slot- my ASVAB was high and I’ve heard that if you score well you get more options, but since I’m getting a waiver for being naughty I dunno how this will affect any potential bonuses or schools to be added in my contract. If anyone could shed some light on this I’d really appreciate it.

now these are really simple questions but I couldn't find straight forward answers online. I'm 15 and I'm in high school. After high school, I want to join the National Guard.
I was talking to a Sargent at my school and he said that if I join the National Guard in a couple of years, I can't leave my state, for travel or even for college. Is this true? I'm in California. He also said that the Reserves are the same as the National Guard, only it's nationwide. I looked online and it said the Reserves don't serve in natural disasters (what the National Guard does)
TLDR Questions: If I join the National Guard, can I leave the state? Are the Reserves the same as the National Guard, but nationwide? (as the Sargent said)
EDIT: one more question, I have an education plan in my school for "ADHD symptoms" and I have a history of Depression and am on medication. Will this affect me getting into the military in 3+ years?

I need some advice. I'm currently in 68W AIT on the Whiskey side of things and I've come to the conclusion the last few weeks that I really want to reclass. I'm just not interested or in my opinion adept in any of the actual medical skills, the only reason I got out of EMT phase is I studied a shit ton and even then I failed my NREMT the first time. At this point you might be asking why did this dumbass pick a medical mos if he isn't interested in medicine and this is a question I've asked myself a lot lately. This was my fifth choice of MOS, yet due to external situations I couldn't wait for the other jobs I wanted to open. I've brought up wanting to reclass to my drill sergeants because at this point I feel like I'm wasting their time and my Sergeants time in class, but they said it's basically impossible at this point unless you fail the NREMT three times(which is a possibility for me). My question is should I intentionally or unintentionally fail the NREMT two more times so I can reclass or should I just suck it up and hopefully graduate?

Currently 29% bf per my recruiter, making me 3% away from being at the maximum for my age. Clearly most of my fat is surrounding my midsection, but it is burning off quick with the diet and exercise I’m doing. I was told to get to a 43.5 inch waistline and I would be good. Translates to about 10 more pounds. I’m very athletic and can move for a big guy. Would I be a military anomaly? I’ve dreamt of joining the military my whole life and I’m finally so close. Is there any other guys in here that have a similar build? Could you share your experience with me? I got temp dq’d with the notes reading that I need to focus on my balance before returning.
I’ve been working on it and it’s pretty good now. Tomorrow, I go to my recruiter to make sure I’m doing it properly.
I was wondering two things:
1) what happens if I go back and mess up the duck walk after being previously disqualified? This makes me nervous. Do I get permanently disqualified at that point? If so, is there an appeals process?
2) do you have any duck walk tips for a guy who’s 6”8 and 276 pounds?

This is part two of a two part post. If you have not read part one yet, you can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/rantgrumps/comments/gul716/game_grumps_major_controversies_list/

Sr. Pelo Drama
This incident has its own thread. I'm going summarize it, but give it a read if you want more information.
Sr. Pelo released an over the top animation about storytime animators. Arin took to Twitter and commented saying that the animation was mean, that he was bullied in the past and that this animation is along the lines of old Newgrounds, the site that Arin got his start from. Sr. Pelo apologized to Arin and said that he mean no harm. Some of Arin's old Newgrounds friends, took notice and defended Sr. Pelo, as well as Newgrounds stating that he came from there, that he has changed over the years, that his online persona is a facade and pointing out that he makes fun of Sonic all the time.
The next day, Arin apologized for the situation and Sr. Pelo said they talked in private and worked things over, but people were quick to note that the apology was a non apology as it only mentioned himself and nothing about Sr. Pelo.

Ghoul Grumps 2018
After missing the annual uploads of Ghoul Grumps, Game Grumps fans went onto Dan's newest Ninja Sex Party music video and ask where the videos are, prompting Arin to apologize, blaming his mental health, saying that they ran out of time due to working on so many projects and that he will do better in the future.
Except, during a recording, Dan tells him they have time after Arin brushes the idea off. Arin was sick during the apology which was also just over eleven minutes long, as well as monetized, and still is to this day.

God Damn it Ross
A few days after Ghoul Grumps 2018, a fan makes a "god damn it, Ross" joke on Twitter. Arin gets upset at her and she receives backlash from Game Grumps fans.
The fan later donates money and apologizes during a stream. Dan and Ross say that it is fine as long as it doesn't happen again, but Arin says that is only okay if he makes fun of his friends because they are friends and not some "rando on the internet", despite selling "god damn it, Ross" T-shirts. The fan later went on Twitter and talked about their experience afterwards.
This video has a great summary of the situation and has more links that I was unable to get.

Badgegate
After Dan asks for help on what badges to equip in Paper Mario: TTYD in a Q&A, Arin gets passive aggressive claiming that the help is ruining his "unique experience". Arin has gone on record stating that "I don't think I ever been mad at a person bein nice to me".

Soviet Jump Game/Dr. Cecil Advertising
Arin recorded a couple of episodes of Game Grumps where he played the Dendy, the Russian NES. While playing, he came across a mysterious cartridge that didn't work, so he called one of his friends and they explained that it was an unfinished Dendy game. Arin then gave it to Game Grumps' development team and they ported it over to the PC so people could play it right now, being advertised as "a lost piece of gaming history" and "the first ever battle royal game".
Except, neither were true, and instead it was an advertisement to promote Game Grumps' new game Soviet Jump game. This received some outrage from the rare games community and from Game Grumps fans as people did not like being lied to. Jimquistion even talked about how disappointed he was in a podcast. All in all, this is a minor controversy, but questionable advertising is not why it is on this list.
The real controversy started only a few days later when Arin tweeted out that his mother was forcing him to promote his uncle Cecil's new book. This was not the first time he said this, or the last. Because many people come from homes that are not so great, Arin received sympathy and he expressed the fact that he hated doing this.
As time went on and more information came to light, it became clear that Arin's mom was not forcing him and he did not even have an uncle Cecil, it was just Arin in a wig. People were not happy about being lied to, especially after Soviet Jump Game was only a few days prior, and topped with the emotion manipulation of saying his mother was forcing him, backlash was heavy. But instead of apologizing or changing advertisement strategies, Arin doubled down hard, (One, two, three, four, five and there are more.) continuing to advertise the book like this to this day, and even sold a shirt based on people's outrage.

Minor Controversies
While making this list, there were a lot of things that didn't quite make it, but are still discussed fairly frequently or that people brought to my attention. Think of this as an Honorable Mentions section. Things that are not necessarily terrible, and will probably make you raise an eyebrow at most, but are still important enough that people feel they should be discussed.

I'm sorry the truth has upset you
Dan comments on Reddit saying that they are looking for 250-300k views for a series to continue. Someone points out to him that there were many series that were in that range that were dropped and that the algorithm is not a viable excuse. Dan replied to this comment with "I'm sorry the truth has upset you". The responses to Dan's comment were a mixture of sadness and disappointment, with the comment receiving over 200 downvotes before Dan deleted it. Dan then commented on the situation and later deleted his Reddit account.

(Fake) SJW Persona
Welcome to a section I don't want to talk about and expect at least some backlash for, but people bring this up constantly so it's important to mention. A lot of people feel that Arin is embracing a fake SJW persona, (Some examples already on the list: Dream Daddy, Sr. Pelo, Hypocrisy), and while there is nothing wrong with treating people with dignity and respect, the grey area occurs when you start profiting off of that, policing what people can and can not do, and saying one thing and doing another, aka hypocrisy. Here's a collection of examples:
Arpeegees are a blind bag of three pins for $25 designed by Arin, and despite being named things like "Mushboy" and "Fishguy", the pins do not have genders as they are androgynous. Or at least that's what Arin said, and then asked for Male Harpy Fan Art in the very next tweet.
After Dan explains a scene from American Pie, Arin calls it "gross", prompting Dan to respond with "Don't SJW me about movies that came out 20 years ago". They continue to talk about it through out the episode. (Final bit) During this Dan says that Arin would... really enjoy the scene.
Arin calling Shoop Da Whoop a racist meme.
Arin advocating for Twitter to deplatform people.
Arin saying that he won't say "crazy" because it might offend people in the future.
Arin saying that Mario wearing a poncho and sombrero in Mario Odyssey was offensive and then Ryan calling him out on it.
In the episode titled "Tricked into playing Scary 90s FPS game", Google autocompleted some search terms, it goes by fast, but it shows the history of porn websites. The two that stand out are "Scared Virgin gives up" and a Russian Doujin where one of the tags is "gang rape".
At the time of writing this, Ubisoft has been under fire for several weeks for abuse, sexism, and racism that has resulted in the firing of several executives and the Canadian CEO even stepped down. (More links: one, two, three) So Ubisoft might not be something you want your name attached to at this current moment in time. Yesterday Game Grumps released a sponsored video for the new Assassin's Creed. (Update: Another ad this time for Immortals Fenyx Rising)

Game Gyaru
Game Gyaru is the genderbent/rule 63 versions of Dan and Arin inspired by the anime Dirty Pair that Game Grumps has been selling merch of. They have been continuously pushing this set of merch hard (14 out of 33 items in their merch store), even going so far as to give away two free shirts for their 5 million subscriber milestone and Arin even broke years of not animating in order to promote it. But one set of Game Gyaru merch is talked about constantly and that is the selling of titty mouse pads (Ross included), and body pillows, of not only Game Gyaru Dan and Arin, but of Dan and Arin themselves.

Behind The Scenes
On a live stream a Game Grumps Remixer talked a little bit about things behind the scenes. While the stream has since been taken down, but you can find it if you look hard enough, this gives a good summary. Some thing of note from it is that multiple people have bad stories about Arin and this person believes them as they have seen the evidence, Arin's old friends feel like he is corrupt and that is his not the super kind person he says he is, animators get paid only 1-2% of the revenue they make from animation on the Game Grumps channel, and Arin has done illegal things with money.

Secondhand Smoke
Arin says that secondhand smoke isn't harmful. Not much to say here. It is harmful. Would not recommend breathing.

Smut Grumps
Smut Grumps is a NSFW Doujin featuring Suzy. Despite the Grumps being okay with PolyGrumps stuff and in some cases actively encouraging it, Arin requested the author to make some changes, most notably, taking out Suzy and any Game Grumps references. The work continued under the name "Smut Redacted", but the author later says they regretted modifying it.

JonBenét Ramsey
Allie the Game Grumps Social Media Manager posts a picture on Twitter and Instagram about JonBenét Ramsey a 6 year old girl who was brutally murdered. Comments on both Twitter and Instagram are highly negative and even Arin's mother commented. After about 7 hours both posts were taken down, an apology was made and Allie took full responsibility.

Arin Flexing on Twitter
In response to someone criticizing him on Twitter, Arin flexed his accomplishments and then promptly deleted the tweet when people called him out. Besides name dropping Dan Harmon, Arin also states that Game Grumps is the 4th most watched show in North America and that Dream Daddy was the second best selling indie game in 2017. I can find zero evidence to support this both of these claims, not even finding Dream Daddy on a single indie top 10 list for 2017, which was the same year as such indie titles as Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Doki Doki Literature Club, and A Hat in Time were released.

Brent
Brent is Game Grump's Office Manager and someone put together a list of times that he was a complete dick to Game Grumps fans, so I'm going to steal borrow the examples. (One, two, three) The most notable was this exchange on Twitter.

Jon's departure
Jon leaving Game Grumps will probably go down in the history books as a perfect example of how not to leave a channel and there still is some mystery as to what happened to this day, but over on the ConspiracyGrumps subreddit they have compiled together all the information about the break up. This is a lot of information to dig through, but this post and the comments are a good place to start. Since then Game Grumps have removed Jon clips in compilations, edited out people asking about Jon on Miiverse, as well as removing Jon videos from the most recent video purge. For completionist sake, here are all the times Jon was asked about Game Grumps (One, two, three, four) as well as all the time he was mentioned on the show, though it does not appear to be up to date. There was a clip somewhere that had Arin saying that he and Jon met with coffee to say "are we cool now", but I need to dig to find it.

CrikeyDave
Earlier in this list I mentions Shmorky, a confirmed pedophile that abused his girlfriend, that Game Grumps had two animations on their channel from him, coming out March 12th, and Oct 1 2015. After years of people asking them to remove them, the Grumps finally took action June 15th 2020, strangely just a few days after this list was posted. But someone pointed out that this was not the first time something like this has happened.
Meet CrikeyDave, one of a group of people that had allegations come to light against them in early 2014 that include abusing, pedophilia, and stalking along with much much more that went on for several years. (Updated version with more information.) So when Game Grumps released an animation by him in May 2016, people took to the comments, Reddit, and Twitter to let the Grumps know about the allegations. One of the people who brought this to Game Grumps' attention, was one of the victims themselves. Despite all of this, I can confirm that the video was still on the Game Grumps channel in June 2018, more than two years after the fact, and possibly as late as December 2019, more than three. Somewhere within now and that time frame, the video was silently deleted.

Dan Harmon
Continuing on from CrikeyDave, someone pointed out that Dan Harmon should be on here as well. Dan Harmon showed up on an episode of Guest Grumps as well as wrote the six episode YouTube Red series "Good Game" that both Arin and Dan starred in. However, the reason why Dan Harmon is up on this list is because it was confirmed that he was sexually harassing a coworker as well as this video that he made that ends with him have sex with a baby. (skip to 1:10 if you really want to see it)

UPGRADE 'IRAN'
Paul Greenwood, the co-author of LP's guide to Iran and its online Upgrade,
says scoring a visa to Iran remains a matter of luck - or 'inshallah'. If
you get your foot in the door, however, you'll find Iran remarkably cheap
and safe to travel around and the people incredibly hospitable.
FACTS FOR THE VISITOR
* Visas & Documents: The good news is that visas are increasingly easy to
extend inside Iran, but the bad news is that visas to enter Iran are still
a hassle to get in the first place. The current advice is to apply in your
home country several months in advance; try again about two months later if
your first application is refused; or obtain an (extendable) transit visa
in a neighbouring country (Pakistan, Turkey or India). There has been no
letup in the letters from travellers with tales of woe, difficulty and
capriciousness when applying for visas. However, there are individual
stories of charm, ease and straightforward dealings between some travellers
and some Iranian consular staff. Annoyingly, it appears to be a matter of
luck - or inshallah.
US citizens can receive visas from the Iranian Interests Section in the
Pakistan embassy in Washington if they can prove they have prebooked
flights to/from Iran and accommodation in Iran, and have a 'good' reason to
travel there (or pretend that they do), eg an interest in Islamic
architecture, visiting family etc.
* Visa Extensions: Travellers (and the author) report successful visa
extensions in Tabriz (as much as 30 days is possible); Esfahan (only 10
days, but in 24 hours or less); Shiraz (seven to 10 days regularly given,
but 15 or more days if you ask nicely); Kerman; and Mashhad (30 days is
possible within 24 hours). Tehran is now far better, and extensions within
24 hours are currently possible.
* Money: There are now four exchange rates. The official rate of US$1 =
3000 rials, stubbornly set by the Central Bank, is meaningless; make sure
that banks don't use this rate when you change travellers cheques (if you
can) or get a cash advance with a credit card, or when you buy anything
with a credit card.
Secondly, banks that have foreign exchange facilities offer about US$1 =
5700 rials. Thirdly, the 'street rate' at the safe, legal money exchange
offices is about US$1 = 8000-8500 rials, and that is still the best way to
change money. Finally, the dodgy black market traders offer about US$1 =
8500+ rials, but the extra is not worth the risk. (The exchange rates
offered by money exchange offices, and particularly the black market
traders, will vary according to the current economic, political and social
situation in Iran.)
Many mid-range hotels will change money at about US$1 = 8000 rials. Budget
hotels are often not interested, or trustworthy; top end hotels usually
offer the bank rate of about US$1 = 5700 rials.
Travellers have had trouble converting rials into US dollars when leaving
the country, even with a bank receipt. Try at the airport, or better, don't
change too much just before leaving Iran.
* Costs: Entry fees to all government-run museums and galleries have now
been set at between 15,000 and 20,000 rials. The cost of transport, hotels
and food has increased by about 40% over prices quoted in the guidebook.
However, you get many more rials for your US dollar now, so Iran is even
cheaper than it was.
The minimum you'll need to pay for budget hotels, Iranian food and
overland, public transport is about US$10 per person per day. Unless you
thrive on discomfort, however, allow about US$30 per person per day. Add to
this the cost of internal flights (which are still ridiculously cheap),
long-distance chartered taxis and souvenirs.
* Post & Communications: Iran is very slowly getting on the Net. Several
Internet centres have opened in Tehran, and one has started up in Yazd. In
Esfahan and Shiraz, rug sellers in the bazaars have set up internet
stations. A little delta (triangle) sign indicates that computers are
available.
* Dangers & Annoyances: Despite the US and UK bombing of Iraq (and a stray
missile or two did land on Khorramshahr inside Iran), some huffing and
puffing between Iran and the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the murder of some
liberal writers, Iran remains one of the safest countries in the region.
There were several kidnappings of foreign tourists in south-east Iran in
1999, thought to be linked to the drugs trade, but their releases were
successfully negotiated.
US citizens remain unwelcome by the government (but not by the Iranian
populace in general). A bus carrying US businessmen was attacked in
mid-1998 by some radicals, although nobody was harmed. Despite this, US
visitors who can get a visa should have few problems if they keep a low
profile.
GETTING THERE & AWAY
* Air: Iran Air has commenced weekly flights to Copenhagen. Pariz Air has
commenced flights between Bandar-e Abbas and Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE,
currently on Sunday and Wednesday. Departure tax is about US$40.
* Land: Pakistan: There is now only one train per week between Zahedan and
Quetta. It leaves Zahedan at 8.30 am on Monday. The ticket office in
Zahedan is open from 7 am to 2 pm daily except Friday.
One traveller reported an unpleasant surprise when entering overland into
Iran. They were charged an extra US$174 in 'fuel tax', apparently to
compensate Iran for allowing foreigners travelling on transit visas to buy
petrol at such cheap prices, in an attempt, effectively, to charge the
equivalent of the higher petrol prices in neighbouring countries. This
doesn't apply to visitors with tourist visas.
GETTING AROUND
The government was forced to slash petrol subsidies in late 1998, so the
price of petrol nearly doubled. This naturally resulted in a similar
percentage increase in taxi and bus fares and may affect prices for other
forms of transport. However, by western standards the price of all local
transport remains incredibly cheap.

THE SCOOP
News For the Itchy of Foot
THAILAND
Severe flooding hit Central Thailand over the weekend 3-4 June, blocking
roads and leaving villages underwater. The Chanthaburi river overflowed
into farmland after heavy rains. Villages, orchards and fish farms in
Chanthaburi and Trat were inundated, and roads linking several villages
were blocked by tree trunks or branches. Many were covered by a metre of
water. Flooding reached the Khao Saming and Bo Rai districts of Trat, and
some parts of the Bo Rai district were inundated. In many of the flood
stricken districts water levels are not expected to drop in the near
future, and relief packages are being issued to remote villages.
Authorities have ordered full scale relief operations to be prepared as
concern grows over rising water levels. Travellers should be prepared for
transport disruptions in these areas, remain flexible in their plans and
consult local sources to keep up to date with developments.
INDONESIA
Indonesian police have expressed concern over the number of counterfeit
notes in circulation in Jakarta and on the island of Bali following the
arrest of 15 people this week for distributing funny money. An estimated
6.5 billion Rp of counterfeit money has been discovered in the past three
months, most of it in the form of 50,000 Rp notes. The government has
contemplated withdrawing the note (which bears the visage of disgraced
ex-President Soeharto) and re-issuing it with a new design. Meanwhile,
Indonesia's central bank has announced that there are flaws in some genuine
100,000 Rp notes, which smudge when rubbed intensely. Travellers in
possession of ink-smeared 100,000 Rp notes can exchange them at local
banks.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE)
Abu Dhabi's first female-only shopping mall has proven to be a mild
success. As most shopping malls in the UAE are popular meeting places for
men to smoke and drink coffee in air-conditioned comfort, many women avoid
them. But not the She Zone, where more than 300 women visit each weekday
and about 1100 women visit on the weekends. In the She Zone women are not
required to wear the abaya - a long overcoat - or a veil while they are
shopping and all staff (including security guards) are female.

How's Your Sense of Direction?
The Indians called the island Siguanea but when Christopher Columbus
arrived he renamed it El Evangelista. From the 16th to the 18th century it
was a hideout for pirates such as Francis Drake, John Hawkins, Thomas
Baskerville and Henry Morgan. They called it Parrot Island and their
activities inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write 'Treasure Island'.
Since then the island has changed names a few more times and been home to
political prisoners and students from all over the world. These days its
big attractions are the unspoiled natural environment and the unhurried way
of life. Scuba divers are drawn to the entire region.
Name the island and the country to which it belongs and we'll put you in

DECADENT DUNNIES
Well, we did ask. Remind us never to use the words 'describe' and 'toilet'
in the same sentence ever again. One little request for stories of bizarre,
luxurious or otherwise memorable WCs in restaurants around the globe and we
opened the floodgates to more tales of filth and frivolity than you could
poke a funny smelling stick at.
The following 20 people picked up a prize for their efforts - both literary
and lavatorial: Ariana Cynowicz, Benjamin Scheiner, Chris Azure, Claire
Mitchell, Craig Zimmerman, Dorian Moro, Egan Cheung, Gavin Mooney, Jim
Calderwood, Jodie Holckner, Kassandra Humphreys, Kim Binstead, Liz
O'Donnell, Molly de Aguiar, Paul Roach, Poppy Collyer, Richard Carr,
Stephane Coillet-Matillon, Vanessa Dwyer and Xavier Finlayson.
Ben did it down a 15 metre mine shaft in Coober Pedy in outback Australia.
Molly opened the pod bay doors onto a 2001 experience in Paris. Liz got all
Phillipe Starck on us in New York. Poppy followed the instructions and
ended up learning more than she needed to know about the diet of French
lorry drivers. Chris and Richard? We couldn't in good conscience keep their
extracts to ourselves:
From Chris Azure of Hong Kong:
'The most memorable and bizarre restaurant toilet I've ever seen is without
a doubt the toilet of Seiryuumon, a Chinese theme restaurant in Shinjuku,
Tokyo.
The restaurant itself is a very memorable one, but the toilet is really the
strangest part. As soon as you enter, you notice that coming out of one of
the walls is a huge, grotesque figure resembling some kind of eight armed
Chinese god. Two of these arms are holding a big, red-lipped smiling mouth,
which, it soon dawns on you, is the urinal.
As you go up to the urinal and begin to do your stuff, some truly bizarre
music (with German lyrics, I believe) starts up, and in time to this, the
god starts to swing the urinal from side to side. The god's head revolves
to reveal an identical head wearing makeup and making a suggestive kissing
expression at you.
As if all this isn't enough, you notice a flashing light and you look up to
discover that one of the arms holds a camera (with 'gay photo' written on
the front) that points down and flashes away at you.
I'm not sure what's more amusing: the experience itself, or the embarrassed
expressions of others emerging from the toilet after knowing what was in
there. I just hope I don't see myself some day on some Japanese hidden
camera show.'
From Richard Carr of the UK:
'We spent an unhealthy morning in a deserted branch of Nando's (somewhere
between Port Elizabeth and East London, along South Africa's southern
coast) nursing a hangover, trying not to gag at the smell of cooked meat
and taking advantage of the 'bottomless coffee' offer.
Although the whole experience retains a dreamlike quality, I am almost
positive that the deep and capacious urinals were stacked full to bursting
with ice cubes. However many times I returned it looked as though the
urinals had only just before been filled to the brim - you honestly could
not have got one more cube in! This lavish effect was entirely out of
keeping with the ambience of what was barely more than a fast food outlet.
Perhaps the dial on the ice machine had broken off whilst turned to
'maximum output'.
There is something disturbingly satisfying about creating your own ice
sculpture using nothing more than the power of hot urine and a slightly out
of kilter imagination. The deep yellows straining through the reflections
of white and black tiling was deeply fascinating. The acoustics of the
gents, exacerbated by my hangover, amplified the sounds of cracking ice so
it was as though I was peeing beneath a moving glacier.
I have since taken up ice sculpture on a semi-professional basis, albeit
using the more usual tools of the trade: a chisel, a small hammer, a
sculpture's knife and a tub of luke warm water.'

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: THE PRICE OF ECOTOURISM IN COSTA RICA
Rob Rachowiecki, co-author of LP's new edition of 'Costa Rica', says size
definitely matters when it comes to ecotourism development.
Costa Rica has so much to offer the wildlife enthusiast that it's small
wonder that ecotourism is growing in the country. Over 70% of foreign
travellers visit one or more nature destinations; half of these visitors
come specifically to see Costa Rica's wildlife.
During the past few years, the natural wonders of Costa Rica have been
discovered. From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s, the annual number of
visitors doubled, and now over 700,000 foreign tourists visit every year.
The tourism industry recently surpassed bananas and coffee as the nation's
biggest industry (though 1998 figures placed it second, behind electronics,
another newcomer). Prices for the traveller have risen substantially.
The financial bonanza generated by the tourist boom means that new
operations are starting up all the time - many are good, some are not. The
big word in Costa Rica is 'ecotourism' - everyone wants to jump on the
green bandwagon. There are 'ecological' car rental agencies and
'ecological' menus in restaurants! Taking advantage of Costa Rica's 'green'
image, some developers are promoting mass tourism and are building large
hotels with accompanying environmental problems. Apart from the immediate
impacts, such as cutting down vegetation, diverting or damming rivers and
driving away wildlife, there are huge secondary impacts like erosion, lack
of adequate waste treatment facilities for a huge hotel in an area away
from sewerage lines, and the building of socially, environmentally and
economically inadequate 'shanty towns' to house the maids, waiters, cooks,
cleaners, and many other employees needed. I recommend staying in smaller
hotels that have a positive attitude about the environment rather than
large, mass-tourism destinations.
At first, the growth in tourism took the nation by surprise - there was no
overall development plan, and the growth was poorly controlled. Some people
wanted to cash in on the short term, with little thought for the future.
Many developers are foreigners - they say that they are giving the local
people jobs, but locals don't want to spend their lives being waiters and
maids while watching the big money go out of the country.
Traditionally, tourism in Costa Rica has been on a small and intimate
scale. About 90% of the country's hotels are small (fewer than 50 rooms),
and the friendly local people have worked closely with tourists, to the
benefit of both. This intimacy and friendliness was a hallmark of a visit
to Costa Rica, but this is changing.
The developers of a recent project to build a 402-room hotel (the first of
a chain) on a remote Pacific beach were sued for causing environmental
damage and treating employees unfairly. Although the government agreed that
laws were broken, the Spanish-owned hotel opened in 1992 and sparked off a
spirited controversy within Costa Rica.
The big question is whether future tourism developments should continue to
focus on the traditional small-hotel, ecotourism approach, or turn to mass
tourism, with planeloads of visitors accommodated in 'mega-resorts' like
the ones in Cancun, Mexico. From the top levels of government down, the
debate has been fierce. Local and international tour operators and travel
agents, journalists, developers, airline operators, hotel owners, writers,
environmentalists and politicians have all been vocal in their support of
either ecotourism or mass tourism. Many believe that the country is too
small to handle both forms of tourism properly.

2020.06.08 23:48 JmsChong Things done wrong in the LoR open beta jacket marketing

for anyone unfamiliar I'm talking about this piece of merchandise

I would be more than happy to give my 120 euros and maybe more if i could show off that open beta rank icon on my back. LoL did it at the end of Season 9 with their hoodies.
Seriously Rito? Makes me feel like I'm browsing a scam shop site. Also I'm kind of hesitant spending that much money for a product that I will have likely forgotten about by the time it's promised to ship.
I get it. You're Riot Games. Your values are bigger than that. That's why we love you. But I think nobody would mind a small window on the shop showing off the jacket. Especially since time to pre-order is limited. I'm pretty sure most people here have never heard about it before.
Apart from the logo on the inside (which will never be visible when worn) and the subtly visible game title on the right there is nothing about it that makes me feel like I'm wearing a LoR product. The zipper logo and the "open beta" on the left shoulder are basically noticed only if already aware of their existence.
----
All in all, I'd really love to spend money on LoR products, but everything about this one could have been way better.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk

2020.06.08 14:50 DubTeeDub Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc– If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.06.03 10:35 JohnVonTrapp Summary of last nights Q&A on Twitter with Adam Cole (Founder & CEO of Football Index).

I will just copy and paste the Questions and Answers from the timeline below:

Q. With the growth thats already happened on the index over the last year, where do you see it in 2 years?
A. Based on the trajectory and last two years; 10X bigger I’d say

Q. Thanks for the Matching Engine. Game changer. And great handling of the COVID period. What is the next big #FootballIndex event on the road map?!
A. The next big events are ‘Offers’ setting a target sell price effectively and NASDAQ. Plus a fair bit of housekeeping on the little bits we have to fix ahead of the new season

Q. I’m sure we all want to know... how’s the media revamp looking? Are you likely to add in a few foreign media sources?
A. The main thrust of it will be to focus on QUALITY news sources. It was the biggest gripe in the last survey. It could even be a tabloid free zone going forward but bear in mind nothing is final yet.

Q. Expansion?
A. Yes. But not until Q4 2020 at the earliest

Q. Hi Adam, Will you be looking at implementing expiry dates on shares? If so when would could we expect to see this introduced on the platform. Thanks
A. I’m hopeful before the new season this will be in place

Q. Can you confirm if the PB, matrix will be reviewed or left as is please, traders need to plan accordingly. Also, when can we expect the time stamp on shares? Thanks
A. The match day matrix is up for review but that does not necessarily mean it will change, just that we are reviewing it. We will make a further announcement later in the summer.

Q. What’s the marketing plans going forward? Are you ramping them up again over summer
A. We’re slowly ramping up now ahead of the PL kick off. There will be some exciting new plans for the new season which will be announced at the appropriate time

Q. When will the IPO system be sorted efficiently? & what will you do to make sure there’s no crashes, will the prices be set by us, the buyers, rather then pre-made starting prices from you guys?
A. The IPO system as we know it has had a lot of work to improve reliability. But with so much emphasis on orderbooks we've not maxed out that potential. To be honest the IPO system, though more robust, is still not great hence why we’re going slow on IPO until NASDAQ

Q. Great work on the recent launches! Are you able to say how many current active players there are and what target do you have for this year?
A. There’s a very respectable 6 figure level of active paying customers, but I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

Q. Hi Adam, top work on phase 1 of ME! Any idea when we might expect phase 2?
A. The techies are raring to go with Phase 2. Such a successful launch and I think they’ve really done a great job smoking out the bugs before that went live. Thank you to our whole team it’s been great

Q. Hi Adam, is there any thought towards goal keepers and making them more appealing / useful to hold going forward? Seems the only category that is next to useless for holding
A. Thanks for the feedback it would be great if you fill in our survey next week and share your thoughts on this so we can collect the data and make informed decisions based on all our traders feedback

Q. When can we expect IPO releases?
A. They are happening but we do want to step it up. Keep looking out for further messaging on this

Q. I'm wondering when easy wins such as players bios being incorrect and retired footballers will be removed from the platform? These surely take no time + have a massive positive effect.
A. Hi there thanks for the feedback hope you’re keeping well. Yes appreciate they are gnarly little items we need to sort and we will do ahead of the season. It’s been all focus on orderbooks to be honest

Q. Do you have a date for the return of IPOs and will they be on the old system, or a new bid system?
A. We have been running some low level IPO’s under the old system so keep an ear out for that. We're eager to ramp this up with the new system when thats in place

Q. Will traders be able to place sell orders above market price when that side of the matching engine goes live?
A. I would like to see that yes but various features may be implemented slowly rather than all in one go

Q. Will you be able to set sell orders above the buy price once full order books are in place? Are you planning on changing the pb matrix this year?
A. Thats the plan re sell orders but maybe not in the first instance of it being introduced. The matrix is up for review so it may or may not change.

Q. Are you able to tell us that the PB matrix will remain the same next season or if it will change? Where do you see the platform in 5 years time? Living in Scotland I haven’t seen any marketing are you planning to extend it up north soon?
A. The PB matrix is up for review. So it may or may not change. We will publish a further announcement on this later this summer, in the meantime please fill in our survey next week

Q. Any plans to introduce a system so people can monitor their 3 year limit?
A. Yes absolutely. This is coming, we have really focused all our energy on matching engine but I’m well aware this area needs some love too

Q. Is the 3 year limit in place at the minute. Some of my holds are very close. What will happen to them?
A. We will be adding new functionality so you can see how long you have left. You would need to sell them before they expire

Q. 1. Can goalkeepers please be reviewed? 2. What’re your plans for increasing members in the U.K?
A. We have our most aggressive marketing budget to date for 2020/21 which will dwarf all other previous years put together.

Q. Is Germany one of the countries where pooled liquidity would be possible?
A. This is unclear at this time I’m afraid.

Q. Has Covid19 helped #footballindex as a lot of businesses suffered but many users made money I presume this would have given people greater confidence in the market and its longevity. However with less sales has this impacted your business plan?
A. I don’t think covid has helped the business at all. We do more business when football is being played. However I think it has focused the mind and I’m really delighted we delivered phase one of orderbooks at this difficult time

Q. The buy values have become irrelevant on a number of players and therefore our portfolio values are inaccurate. Have you got plans to address this?
A. Looking to add more reporting metrics to the site and I know alot of people dislike the current P&L reporting so we’re sorting that

Q. Please explain what NASDAQ is and what difference it will make to the platform
A. It’s the technology that matches bids and offers behind the scenes and has massive scale capacity and various brilliant features to

Q. Your advert specifically stated "25 UK news publishers." That is not currently the case as you only use 20. So my take is that that statement made on your advert was just factually incorrect?
A. I’m not sure which advert you’re talking about. We do have 25 feeds and these have been in place since inception but I’m aware some of them may now be inactive hence why we’re looking to improve this for the new season.

Q. When are you going to time stamp shares? So simple but hasn’t been done!
A. We have been prioritising the matching engine. However I know this needs to be done. There is some complexity if you buy the same player at different times etc.

Q. Will there be a marketing drive over the next few weeks with the leagues returning???
A. Yes we’ve been mostly off air during the pandemic but we’re gradually coming back over the next week or so

Q. Tabloid free! This could bring HUGE change to the media!
A. This is not set in stone. I’m just saying that most feedback has complained around the tabloid quantity of articles.

Q. Will traders be able to place sell orders above market price when that side of the matching engine goes live?
A. I would like to see that yes but various features may be implemented slowly rather than all in one go

Q. Any chance of a #FootballIndex gift box with a pen - beer mat - stickers - note pad and such! Think this would be really cool!
A. I’ll speak to the marketing guys

Q. Hi Adam, can we expect to see transfer dividends during the summer similar to what we saw during the final couple of weeks of January, this would drive a lot of trading activity based on the speculation and wondering if this will continue during transfer periods
A. No current plan for this I’m afraid. But if you like this idea please feed it back in next weeks survey so we get all the feedback in one place

Q. When can we expect the next step of order books to be released? When will traders be able to set sell orders?
A. If our techies were in charge of this they would have it out in a week or so, but we need to introduce things in a phased approach and collect data on the impact individual changes have on the market. If we introduce too much too soon it will be harder to monitor

Q. When will the “low hanging fruit” glitches be ironed out? Stuff like 24 h7 day P&L are horribly wrong. Players with out of date profiles and wrong information on the bios. Stuff that can make the platform look amateur unfortunately.
A. We are working on this. These are definitely high priority ahead of the new season

Q. Has Brexit affected the likelihood of pooled liquidity in EU countries?
A. I think that depends if there is a deal or not.

Q. Are you going to increase IPDs to two or three months? Spreads at the low end make it pretty worthless buying a player for goals or assists now.
A. No plan to do this but thanks for the feedback and we will consider that

Q. Can we expect tiered PB in the near future?
A. Absolutely not

Q. When you do go live, how likely is it that it will be one big index? Have you had any breakthrough with the foreign online gambling laws?
A. The laws are complex and rarely converge so it’s about how we deal with each individual territory separately whilst maintaining the commonality of the offering as a whole. There is no guarantee of pooled liquidity but it’s my preference it if we can do it

Q. This is what happens when you have goodwill gestures in the past, expectations change. The apparent entitlement to free money is madness. Give an inch and people will always take a yard
A. Apologies for the error, that is our fault. We have tried to deal with it swiftly and fairly but appreciate this will inconvenience some people

Q. 1. Will we see transfer dividends return in some capacity? 2. Is there whispers of a share split sometime next year now Sancho is nearing £15? 3. Talk of a Team of the week/month dividend ?
A. No current plans for any of those three items near the top of the agenda. Orderbooks, NASDAQ, Media Review and planning for next season

Q. Any news on any other country coming onto are platform soon ? Any timescale when we should expect them to join ?
A. Yes we have put a lot of work into new territories with lots of ambition to get live this year but this Covid situation has added to our lead-time so we’re focusing on things in our control like launching order books and NASDAQ. It’s a long process from a legal perspective and in some instances we’ve probably lost up to 6 months on new territories. We’ll get there but I’m not confident for the new season. Still, this won’t impact UK users at all so onwards and upwards with our NASDAQ plans

Ok. I'm sure i've missed some but I can't hit CMD+ C, CMD+ V any more. Happy to edit post if anyone wants to flag a glaring omission. Just send me a message or reply with the link and i'll edit the post.

2020.05.30 14:17 Chryzophalanx Wild Rift May 2020 Update - Alpha Test Date and MORE!

Wild Rift Official Page just released an update regarding the Alpha Test release date and many more
League of Legends: Wild Rift is coming to the Philippines for an alpha test, starting June 6!
If you haven’t checked out Wild Rift’s recent gameplay reveal, go do that first. We’ll be right here.
https://youtu.be/_PtHQvjlbKw
... welcome back!
We compiled the top 10 questions that we think you might have and put some answers to ’em. Let’s dig in:
Q: What is the Wild Rift Regional Android Alpha? A: From June 6 to June 27 (Manila time), Wild Rift will be available to a limited group of players in Brazil and the Philippines on Android phones. This test will be pretty small, and much of the game is still very work-in-progress, but we’re collecting feedback on a few important things.
Q: What are you testing? A: We’re glad you asked: • Wild Rift’s core gameplay, because we have to know if Wild Rift lives up to your standards for a genuine League experience. • Game systems, so we can figure out if it’s easy to get your friends onto Wild Rift, if our progression systems feel rewarding, and that getting champs feels fair. • Infrastructure and service stability, to make sure we’re upholding a high quality of service for your matches.
Q: How do I get in? A: The test will be pretty small this time around, but we’re going to be randomly selecting from players who have pre-registered for Wild Rift on Google Play! We’ll be inviting more players as the test goes on, so keep an eye on your email if you don’t get in on day one. We’re also raising the minimum device spec for this test, but there’s more on that below. Reminder: Once invited, you’ll need to log in with the same Google account you pre-registered with.
Q:What if I don’t get in? A: We still love you! We won’t be able to fit the majority of you in, but we still want to show you what we’ve been up to. Did you watch the gameplay reveal yet? Scroll back up!
Q:Why Brazil and the Philippines? A: Well, for one, we really love churrasco and chicken adobo. But we also wanna start in just a couple of regions where players aren’t super similar in the way they play games. This way, we get a range of feedback and data to make sure we’re hitting the mark among different groups of players!
Q: My skills are top tier, but my phone isn’t—what are the minimum device specs? A: We’re temporarily raising the minimum device spec for this test, as we’re testing a few things mostly unrelated to performance. We are committing to making the game accessible to as many devices as we can without compromising Wild Rift’s core gameplay, and we’ll be working more on this as we approach launch.
Regional Alpha minimum specs: (Android phones only) CPU: 8 Core, 1.5 GHz and above, 64-bit processors only RAM: 3GB and above Resolution: 1280 × 720 and above
Launch minimum spec targets: (Android phones) CPU: 4-core, 1.5 Ghz and above, 32-bit or 64-bit processors RAM: 1.5GB and above Resolution: 1280 × 720 and above
(iOS phones) iPhone 6 and above
Q: If I get in, can I talk about the game? Can I record or stream stuff? A: Yup! There’s no NDA on this one. Make sure to show us what you make!
Q: Will anything carry over to the full launch? A: Nope. Unless you count building up your sweet skills a bit before everyone else.
Q: What about if I encounter bugs or need to contact Player Support for something? A: As Wild Rift is still in the alpha phase, and also due to the constraints that are currently impacting a lot of game companies across the world, Player Support for the Wild Rift Alpha will be a bit lighter than Riot’s other titles for now.
But never fear—we have a small site spun up to tackle some more questions for y’all. We won’t be able to respond to individual ticket requests, but we are monitoring your feedback, and we’ll have upgrades for future tests and for launch. Alpha players can also submit direct feedback to us through the Google Play Store.
Q: Where can I find more info? A: Keep in touch with us, we really want to hear from you!
Twitter: https://twitter.com/wildrift Instagram: https://instagram.com/playwildrift Facebook: https://facebook.com/playwildrift YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/wildrift Website: https://wildrift.leagueoflegends.com Player Support (smaller site than usual): https://support-wildrift.riotgames.com
Q: I have so many more questions! A: We’ll be running a Q&A for BR and PH players (whether you’re in the alpha or not) when the test has been live for a little while, so get your spiciest questions ready and we’ll answer them in another post.
That’s it for now! This is just a first step on Wild Rift’s journey, but it’s an important one. Whether or not you’re able to play this time, we still need your feedback, your concerns, and your memes. We really want to make Wild Rift a fun, long-term game, and for that we need to make sure we’re building it with all of you. As we approach launch and beyond, we need YOUR help to tell us what we’re doing right, what we’re messing up, and what we should focus on next.
See you real soon!

2020.05.29 14:08 Certain_Floor help me please.

This is my last cry for help. This quarantine has vigorously awaked the deep thoughts I've had in my mind that I've suppressed for all this time.
Please I just need at least ONE person to hear my whole story.
Truth be told, I shouldn't even be on a site like this right? But I've become so desperate that the last 2 days I'm slowly googling stuff that I was too scared to Google back then..and I've fallen here.
After reading a few posts (ofc I'm being weary as all of u would know) I'm really shocked by what I found. Not a bad shocked.
I'm not sure what I expected but I always thought if I read posts like this my head would get twisted lol but one fo the top posts is sort of.. endearing? Everyone is really sweet, I'm no stranger to the internet (may be my weakness) so I'm saying it relatively .
But please listen to what I have to say as you guys know I'm taking a quote on quote risk already. And if you're just going to tell me how bad this is you can please leave, I want objective answers.
I started when I was really young. I wasn't born into the truth (see I use these terms as I'm sure u guys know it's the ones I'm most familiar with don't get offended pls) but at a very early age my parents started studying. I don't remember exactly how old I was but I was in elementary school. My uncle is actually a jw and he was the one that told my dad at first but then my dad moved to LA and left my uncle.
Then here in LA we lived in a house right behind the kingdom hall. That's when one day some sisters came to us and my mom and dad decided they would study and we started studying as a family. P.s. we're 5.
(I still think it would've been smarter to give study to us separately but that's another topic)
The head elder was the one giving us study (if I'm using the wrong terms it's bc Ive only ever been in a Spanish speaking congregation so I'm not too familiar with English terms I hope u understand) and we started progressing at a VERY rapid speed.
I got baptized at age 9. Yes you read correct. Aside from me there had only ever been another girl (older than me currently) who had gotten baptized that early. This was a blessing but a curse and I'll tell you why, expectations.
So as you've probably guessed by now, all my life all I've ever really known is this. A jw lifestyle. I have ofc memories of when I was really little and going to birthday parties of my cousins (went bcy parents were still really close to the aunt's) but I myself have never had a birthday party, celebrated Christmas, or Halloween or anything really.
When I was studying as a kid I learned what a special pioneer was (I'm really sorry I'm transacting that term from Spanish but it's the pioneer one level above the regular) and it was then that I told everyone that was my goal. I would work hard everyday to achieve this goal, I said.
The couple that gave us study moved away as they were missionaries. After being the most perfect little jw kid, ya know, constantly preaching and talking for myself (I've always been talkitive), commenting, following rules in the hall, I entered middle school.
Middle school was wild tbh. I'm not gonna sit here and lie bc clearly I don't need to add more offenses to my resume😌😳, I sort of went a little haha.. crazy in middle school. Or at least I thought I did, but turns out the other teens in my hall went CRAZIER and I was actually the tamed one😳
The tea is, all of them went to the same middle school and I was the only one who went somewhere else👀
N E WAY
6th grade? Sweet little angel 👼 7th grade? Oh no ! I had my first boyfriend.. LIKE I SAID THIS IS MY FULL UNCENSORED STORY THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IVE BEEN THIS OPEN SO PLS🥺 Truth be told, I only said yes to him bc in 6th grade I had this crush on a boy and everyone found out and they labeled me as the girl who likes him and he was dating one of my school friends but I don't want to talk about 6th grade bc it's pretty irrelevant now, I did get really sad tho,, oh so I said yes to the guy in 7th grade bc I wanted people to forget my previous scandal, but my biggest fear was a teacher telling my parents. So I kept it a secret lol I got bored of him after 1 week :/ dating just wasn't for me and I felt terrible, I'm that moment I thought "wow this is the first time I betray Jehovah like this and for what? Dating isn't even what I thought it'd be sad yeehaw😔✋" the boy cheated on me anyway but I was just happy to have an excuse to break up with him. Thanks to it being a secret nobody even knew I did that... Also I started swearing a lot in 7th grade. Up until 6th grade I had been a perfect angel so it felt like the bottle broke. I also discovered the internet and my friends themselves would talk about topics...that I cough would never cough tell an elder about ʘ‿ʘ
Then 8th grade came, guess what? Got another boyfriend. But this time it was against my will, he was a friend and his girlfriend had broken up with him so I was just letting him vent to me and then he "liked" me and told me if I didn't date him he would kill himself. He would self harm in front ofe too, at the time my mental health wasn't the best. Want me to tell you why? Wait a little more hold up
So we went out in secret (again) for a week and I begged him to stop and that I had already given him what he wanted, a week of being his "girlfriend" (but that week I curved him every second I got) tbh that part of 8th grade really messed me up, it sucked not having anyone to tell that to..
So while I was in middle school, a new couple came to our congregation. And every waking second they would tell the teens to apply for pioneering. And they would tell me but I'd always say "I have school" the brother even gave me a bunch of applications it's like Everytime I saw him, boom! New application!
So one day we had a party for another couple I think and the brother told me "so I'm passing by your house after this to pick up your application" and I LITERALLY was like "👁️👄👁️" I was like HOLD AWN but everything happened so fast.
I went home and thought about it. This WAS a HUGE step towards my dreams and at the tkme I had just finished middle school, this could be my fresh start. So I filled in the paper and have it to him. I was super thrilled!
That week, turns out practically every other teen had also turned in their application so in total there were like maybe 8 new regular pioneers?
So for 9th grade, my first year of high school, I enrolled in a homeschool so I could have time to do my field service hours. And that's how I became a pioneer at 14.
It was a whole new world and going to pioneer meeting and being the youngest one in the room, (remember I'm not censoring anything), made my little heart flutter with joy. I remember telling am elder that I felt it was about time I progressed as the past 3 years had felt like a step back for me.
I loved going to preach with the brothers, they would pick me up and I'd do return visits with them in the afternoon and eat lunch or was all clear skies, except it wasn't. School got extremely tiring, home schooling isn't easy especially for me since I have trouble learning without a visual guide. And my head started spiraling, I wasn't turning in the hours and it felt like if everything I had tried to do was falling apart
It's time I tell you the truth, about my family life. My family life....it isn't the best.....at all. I've cried myself to sleep countless times.. I constantly feel like a failure too. My dad and mom used to hit me when I was little, unfortunately it's seen as probably the most common form of discipline in our culture. my dad was the worse... I didn't think it affected me but I notice it to this day, I flinch at loud sounds and when someone slightly raises their hand at me I put my hands up to protect my face and look away.. that was them but the thing is, my dad is still pretty abusive to me but verbally
Sometimes I wish he'd just hit me and get done with it already. He's called me so many cruel things, you name it, one time he called me a parasite, a parasite to the family. I was little when he said that but it cut me in the heart and I still remember that.. then one time I got so exasperated that I accidentally yelled out loud "I want to kill myself" and he got so mad that he told me he "would kill me" he would do it for me.. in short he has anger issues and that day he took away my only outlet, art, I've always used art to cope with the emotions.
If he sees me crying he won't go up to me and ask my why I'm upset, he'll scream at me and yell! I'm so scared of him, my fear of sudden loud noises I think comes from him... I'm so so so scared of him, sometimes ill make up excuses so I won't see him that much in the day bc I'm so scared he'll snap at me
My mom? My mom used to be more aggressive and in that sense the Bible helped her a lot with that, she stopped hitting me and she has a lot more patience with me now. I see the changes in her, but what's always been on my mind is why does she allow my dad to do that? Why can't she help me? I hurt too... I hurt a lot...
That year..2019....I found out something..... It changed my life. The elders called for a meeting with our family late at night and I was so nervous and they broke the news to us...
My dad...he cheated on my mom a long time ago. And bc of that, he has another child.. the se age as my older brother, 24. I've started crying now as I type this bc it's still triggering to me and it pains me. I can't describe to you how badly my heart sank in that moment. I think that was the beginning of everything, of my questioning.
They made us hug at the end, I hated it. That night I cried like crazy... I cried so much. I remember going outside and just crying but that's when I did a prayer to Jehovah, I told him I am not him, I could never be him but I want to be like him. I've always wanted to forgive and forget like him but I told him I couldn't...my heart felt so heavy but I begged him to help me become like him. It was the only thing that consoled me.
That year my grandma visited us from our home country. After a whole month of warming up to a lady I had never met irl, my heart ached to vent so I opened up to her a little about my dad how I felt "he didn't love me" and instantly she silenced me and proceeded to tell me I was dumb for thinking that. It hurt me beyond what I had already ached

See when I was a kid and my dad would hit me I would always tell myself "whatever one of these days I'm going to call my grandma and tell on him with his OWN mom and then she'll rescue me" and now the only hope I had was extinguished. I left the room bc I didn't want to cry in front of her who had dismissed my feelings so quickly.
So about my dad, I cannot forget. It's been a little over a year now. I cannot
Why? Everytime we argue (my dad and I) he gets mad at me over the tiniest little things like for example maybe I didn't do something RIGHT away and he'll go off on me, and in those moments I just think to myself, why is it that I can forgive him the biggest sin a married man can commit, but he can't forgive me an accident?
And then I cry. But then it gets worse because my mom goes to talk to me, but it's never just a talkz she is not capable of having dialogues, she has monologues. Her words cut me like blades (I relate to that text a lot) Everytime I behave bad she tells me "Satan has you really tight in his hand" exactly like that. And she'll remind me I'm a Christian + a pioneer and honestly it makes me feel worse at the end. It feels like if my dad is cutting me, she's stomping on the wounds.
I, however, still continued pioneering to this year. This is my second year of pioneering and atm i am 16 years old. The beginning of this service year felt great bc I felt like I had a fresh new start, but I've got that point again.. I feel so existential..
During this year I tried opening up to my mom but she told me I was at fault.. she says I would stop looking at other mistakes and work on myself. She says to just let my dad go off and Jehovah will keep track of everytime he is unjust to me. At this point, it honestly better for my dad if Jehovah forgets to keep track bc this man is stacking a record as high as his ego. 🙈✨ (I'm sorry I use Twitter language and I stan type)
After she makes me feel like crap I bite my tongue and just take it. But it's just, with him, there's only so much I can take... I hit a breaking point too ya know? His words... they're some that will stick me forever. I'm not one to stay silent over injustices so when my dad starts going off on me I naturally talk back. I feel bad about it too. I cried to my sister 2 nights ago that I really DO feel bad Everytime I talk back to him, I am NOT that perfect jw teen. Just not. But I try. I really do, you have to understand that... But how many insults must I take to the face? I told my mom this and she cited that Bible text where Jesus tells Peter he must forgive up to 70 times I just looked down... I also told her that when my dad goes off on me he goes off on me like if I'm an adult, but, and I cannot stress this enough, I'M S I X T E E N I tell told her "I'm a teen I'm just a kid these words hurt me! I'm not an adult hat can take these words! I'm still young!" And she replied by bringing up a petty thing she said "oh bit suddenly you're an adult when you decided to paint ur nails!" (Context: she said I can't paint my nails till 18 but she actually first said 15 and then changed it to 18 after I turned 15 but during quarantine I got bored and painted my nails but they had worn off anyway by the time she told me this) So I got upset and I told her "he's supposed to treat me not only as a daughter but as a SISTER and you know he would never be like this to a sister!" And she turned that on me too and that I should take the initiative.
Honestly the more I think about it, she seems more like the way the brother describe apostates that you guys💀 bc she TURNS AND TWISTS SCRIPTURES AGAINST ME i'm.not saying I'm THE most educated sister. But I have, to some extent, quote a broad knowledge of the Bible and I've had several points to serve to her but she just uses them against me idk how she does it (maybe my biggest pioneer feat will be beating her in a biblical argument💀✋)
That argument, ah, she went off on me and she said this "I don't know you guys (referring to me and my 2 siblings) I don't know if you're being two faced or not. I don't know if you're going to the meetings because you're underage or because you actually care. I don't know your siblings and they progress themselves. I don't know you really but remember Jehovah does" I think that was possibly the biggest stab to me.
See, I don't know what type of person you've read me as up to now. But when I first started pioneering, I looked back on how I was in middle school and I cringed, I hated myself for acting that way, for abandoning my morals and beliefs. I straightened myself up, and I put my ALL into pioneering. Even now I'm putting my all.. last week for example when that argument happened, I had 70 hours to turn in, 2 big scale projects, 2 essays, and 1 packet of homework (it was meant to be my last week of school so my teacher gave me practically everything at the end), + I got a surprise part for the meeting that week because turns out they fOrgOt tO gIvE iT tO mE and gave it to me last minute. But guess what? I got everything done
Due to using zoom I had technical difficulties in my assignment and I cried in the restroom bc I didn't do my best, my dad got SO mad at me for crying and he insulted me saying I was being prideful by feeling bad bc it showed I wasn't doing it for Jehovah but for me, but the thing is
Im. Constantly. Giving. It. My. All.
I try SO hard, I'm not perfect but my efforts are genuine. And maybe I have been conditioned to be perfect who knows maybe I am being selfish or maybe it's maybelline 😭 (i'm so sorry I HAD to make a joke there because as I'm typing this irl I'm getting too emotional and it's 3:24am I really don't want to start ugly crying and wake up my dad who by now we all know how he will react🙃)
You must be wondering why then, if my dad is a witness and my whole family too, why haven't the elders talked to him?
Because they don't know. No one does. Does anybody here listen to Melanie Martinez? (Edit: a lot of u got confused over this and I admit I didn't word it clearly but my name is not Melanie Martinez, Melanie Martinez is a singer and I'm referencing her song Dollhouse which I can relate to just a sidenote Detention is also a really good song I also relate to lol ty for your concerns tho, they mean a lot) If you do, I'll save you the time, our family I basically like the family in Dollhouse. For those that don't know, basically we have an act of being a perfect family..
We're 5 and we always get compliments when we go to meetings because "omg your family is so big and complete it's so pretty!!" Or when we go to service , "omg you guys look so pretty preaching together ah you guys make the group have a lot of support!" Or when we comment "omg you guys always give good comments and good parts!!" Or when we have foods at our house "omg you guys always throw the best gatherings/parties!!"
But it's all a fraud.
Nobody knows how much we're deteriorating behind the scenes. My dad happens to have this GREAT talent that goes like this: he is the angriest man in the world but he also happens to be HE HAPPIEST MAN IN THR WORLD🥳🥰🤩
His mood swings are insane. Hes also like the most?? Charismatic?? Person?? Ever?? Seriously it's scary, its like he's a sociopath or something,, like I've had sisters and brothers tell me "I could NEVER see your dad getting angry he's just so happy all the time you must feel so happy having a dad like that🥰🥰"
Me: 👁️💧👄💧👁️
Or a sister once told us when we were sitting together: "wow your dad is so bubbly he remind me of my dad. My dad was the sweetest guy when we were in public but when we went home he would hit us and yell at us. It's so nice that you're dad isn't like that right?"
Me:👁️💧👄💧👁️
(I have to use a little bit of humour to cope)
I can't hate my dad because sometimes I love him and I think I have the greatest dad in the world. He's very lenient and he even lets me go to concerts and go out with friends, stuff that sometimes your average jw parent doesn't let their kid do. He's very hard working and we own a small business and he makes sure to always buy me what I want if it's in his reach.
But, as I tried to tell my mom, I don't care for the material stuff, I just want love. To be loved. I want to stop having to walk on ice with him, terrified of what mood he will be in next, having to guess if I will wake up and he will yell at me or make me the happiest girl alive. It's so emotionally draining. I wish he were either plain out mean or nice
If he was just mean I would've told the elders a long time ago, but now no one will believe me.. no one knows how bad our family is..
Thats why my dad always pressures us to be the best, he never says it directly but he always calls us in as a family to lecture us on how we have to do better. I feel all the weight on my shoulders, my siblings can't be pioneers due to their immigrant status so the family reputation has fallen on my shoulders and it's not one my dad takes lightly. He would never admit it but I know he likes the compliments, I know it strokes his ego Everytime I comment or I'm brought up as a pioneer.
But that's the issue.
Ah it's starting to hit me...I feel so embarrassed for being on this site but I can't just delete this as I've already type so much... My biggest fear now is my identity being discovered... I would get into SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much trouble.... I feel guilty for even being here because yes I am a pioneer but, sometimes I feel like that's all I am,t parents don't see me, they see my title.
They only see my accomplishments. And here's the big drop: I want to stop pioneering after this 2nd year ends. I want to take a break. It's too much.. I can't do this without losing myself but then who am I? Ive grown to have such an existential crisis, I can't even begin my journey to loving myself because I don't even know myself. Who am I? Am I really me? Or am I fragments of what other people want me to be?
I never became a pioneer out of love for Jehovah, I became a pioneer because I felt pressure from my elders, my parents, and most importantly myself. I beat myself up for not having some anything in 4 years. I constantly beat myself up, I'm scared people will see me the way I see myself.y mom says I should work on humility but, she doesn't know I'm the one who hates myself the most
I'm the one who puts me down the most, seriously at this point I've given Satan a run for his money because I am my own devil. I push myself so hard and when I break I read myself down for being an idiot but being too stupid. But this is all I've ever want to do.. this was my dream...
There's a song called My Time by bts member Jungkook and I relate to it so much. But in reality, I shouldn't... He sings about how hard it was for him to be so famous at such an early age, why do I feel the pressure of teen celebrities?
I feel so much pressure and tbh the reason I've shut up'd is because in our pioneer meetings they say we should tell non-pioneers about the struggles of being a pioneer bc we'll discourage them, instead we should go to the head of service
But on one hand I'll feel SO judged by brothers or sisters, they'll think I'm leaving, and on the other if I tell people that don't know how being a jw feels they won't understand and they'll give an irrational answer. I couldn't even tell them the full scope of things like I have now.
So I've built this up for 2 years. But I want to take a break... I'll be starting 11th grade soon and that is the most important grade. It's the grade colleges look at to determine if you're in or not, and I will never EVER score good enough to get accepted into a college while pioneering at the same time. Plus I want to pioneer out of love not bc of pressure.
And I want to go to college bc quite frankly, I threw all my teenage years to trash with homeschool... I've been thinking about it, I've been a good child all along, but the desire in me has finally awoken, the desire of wanting to lead a normal teen life. What is it like to actually have a boyfriend? To hold someone's hand? To hug someone? To cuddle someone? To kiss someone? I really want to kiss someone... Now that I'm exposing myself, I'm actually quite flirty, I've always been and like I said I've also always been smooth with my words (probably got it from my dad) and I have flirted with a boy from my hall but I don't really like him..i do feel bad but what else am I supposed to do?
We've both kind of mutually agreed to use each other , he flirts back but I know it's emotionless too, but we're both just so bored. It's like we're each other's guinea pigs
Talking about him, he became a pioneer at the same time as me too, but he left it after a few months, honestly I know why he did it now. I see in his eyes the se feeling I feel now. Plus he was in 11th grade so that also explains he was too busy.
Its not what he wants. And I respect him so much for being able to step down. I could never. Just the thought of them announcing my name and saying I'm not a pioneer anymore sends shivers down my spine..
The only reason my dad hasn't chewed me up about my spirituality as much as my siblings is because I'm a pioneer. It's become my only blanket of protection and if I take it off or even tell them I want to take a break, he will not good back. He will go feral. I'm so scared of that.. my life won't be the same... It just something I cannot do and I've come to terms with it .. I don't know how on Earth I'm going to pull off 11th grade I think I'll die from stress.
Last time I had a panic attack, I thought I had had them before but no, this one confirmed the other were nothing. I started going through so many emotions that all of a sudden I felt a knot in my throat, I've felt this before so I tried to relax but I couldn't. And I started going out of breathe so I start breathing fast and faster but the air just couldn't go to my head and my hands became violently shaky, I then started feeling all my limbs going numb, starts from the tip and stretching to all my body. I felt dizzy and lightheaded and I tried so hard to get some air in but it felt useless. I started panicking more and I was breathing so hard that I couldn't tell when my body became tired. I felt like that was it, I was going to pass out or just up and leave this cruel world. I remember dropping on my bed and just staring blankly without even being able to blink.
After it went away I just sat on my bed trying to breathe and that's when the pain hit my body from breathing so hard. It ached all of it.. I couldn't take it anymore
I finally vented to a human, after being rejected by the 2 adults I trusted and having my feelings being thrown away I told my sister how I felt and tbh idk what I'd do without her bc she told me she'd support me in the decision I take.
But this week is when I came to the conclusion I could never tell my dad. Plus I didn't t ol my sister all of how I felt.
How I want a normal life ... I feel really guilt for having these thoughts but sometimes I think "what would've happened if my parents never started studying?" What if "my parents never became he's? How my life have been then?" I Know my dad would be less competitive and he would let me have a boyfriend, wear what I want, go to all the places I want, hang out with anyone. I daydream about that sometimes, im ashamed of it but I can't help it sometimes....
Today, today we went hiking. I took a bicycle and my brother took his, we were biking alone and away from my family and that's when my brother started opening up to me
I think he'll leave
And join this subreddit soon too
He told me he wants a life for himself he doesn't want to end up as one of the guys in our hall. He told me he sees himself having his own place, he wants to become someone through his efforts.
I almost wanted to shut him up right then and there because he was awakening the desires I had kept to myself. Everything he said was so spot on and I hated him for it..
Because of that I haven't stopped thinking about it and that's how I'm here. I've been typing for 2 hours now. Because now I'm questioning.
I'm currently giving study to someone, someone my age, very interested. But I feel like a hypocrite giving study to this person and as I'm reading the chapters I'm thinking to myself "is this what I want?" I almost want to stop the study so I won't drag that person into what I was dragged into. There. I said it. Sometimes I want to tell that person to stop studying. How cynical of me. I think that then, I silence my thoughts. But as I'm reading the chapters they don't hit the same. I've been doing my regular study more lately and my Bible reading but I don't feel it in me
All I feel is really burnt out.
And as my brother told me about his future I couldn't help but to think of mine. How would I be in 4 years? If I continue like this I think I'm going to have daddy issues🤐
I've always had an inclination to the creative industry and my parents have supported my dream of being a fashion designer but how far will they let me go till I'm lectured on it?
Last time I reconnected with a crush I had since elementary schools this boy is my IDEAL type and I told him I used to like him and he literally told me to shoot my shot like DIRECTLY told me and I went to my online friend and asked her what I should do and she said "well just ask him out" and that when I explained to her why I couldn't. I can't date unless it's for marriage. And she told me I can't figure out who I like if I don't try things out.
It hits me now, why do I even have to ask for advice on that situation when the boy spelled it out for me and all?? Shouldn't a normal teen just have shop their shot?? Spoiler alert: I haven't talked to him in a long time because I thought it was the best to do..once again I behaved, "good
But it's just, I don't have that LUXURY to make mistake, that's why I relate to those young celebrities. It feels like everyone's watching me and I have no room for simple slip ups, it feels like I don't have room to even be human.
I couldn't help but to get sad at the thought of my brother leaving, idk if he'll just become inactive or go full on with being disfellowshipped (I'ma be honest I'm 100% I butchered that) I'm sad because if he goes, the responsibility will just become HEAVIER on me. I don't want to break my parents heart! They already know my brother has been losing interest with the truth if he leaves he'll block all the doors for me and I'll be permanently trapped..and then how can I follow after him..
I want to live life. It hit me today, what if I'm just wasting my life? What if this isn't real? And I'm just going to throw away my life? I want to be big when I grow up. I've always wanted to be big. When I was a kid I would love crowds of my family to watch me dance
In 8th grade I performed 3 dances for a school talent show and I was the center for 2, I had never felt greater joy then when I was on that stage. I can't even describe the adrenaline and the rush that I felt on that stage and having all those eyes on me
It was then I knew "oh snap. I love to perform." I have lived every waking moment since WISHING I would perform on a big stage again. I'm so addicted to that feeling I felt when I stepped onto that stage and had the lights hit me. But I've haven't felt since then...
Then in 6th grade I took acting classes in school and I was ranked the highest one in my class for both screen writing and performance. They loved the way I could improvise and get into character without being shy or embarrassed. I have acting my all sometimes I cry when pretending to be characters
The acting teacher told me I could come any time to her actual acting school and she would take me on
Of course I knew I could never fullfil hers or my dream..
Then I also have a secret Instagram page and I LOVE to posts, I want to take photoshoots and I put so much effort into what I post
I've even gotten brands reach out to me but once again my dream was cut short..
For high school in 9th grade when it got to be too much I applied to an art high school into the dance department because that is where my happiness was. It was one of the top 5 of the city (or country bc it's in la) REALLY hard to get into. Guess what? I got accepted! But.... I'll cut you the sadness, I'm still homeschooled right now.
Everytime I pass it on my way to school I want to cry but I tell myself I made the right decision
I've rejected:
• acting school
• dance school
• brand sponsorships
For Jehovah
Because I want to give him all my time and I'm about to reject fashion school too!
Everytime it feels good to turn it down, well at the moment. Then I wish I wouldn't have. Now I've really hit deep with this existential crisis. Who am I? What am I going to do
It's true I'll admit it here, I don't want to live this life forever. I want to know what it feels like to have control over my life..
But the thing is, I believe in Jehovah. I believe in him SO much now, he's a father to me.
It's just the organization thats demanding so much of me at the moment
But I feel selfish turning away because I don't want to hurt Jehovah but sometimes I wonder why I'm even a witness why does Jehovah love me? If I have all these thoughts
I can see myself being a socialite. Having lots of friends, I'm an extravert and relatively charismatic, I can see myself having fun
I love to party and dance I love to dress up
But I feel I'll never have this
I feel burden too because I'm the youngest and my parents are getting older, I have to take care of them
But I want to go to college, get a boyfriend, have lots of friends. Become a successful fashion designer and stylists. Perform on big stage
All this... A part of me is eating me away with how ashamed I feel of myself
I have to decide soon as I'll enter 11th grade in like a month.
But is this too much to ask for...
My mom once told me "i just feel like your going to leave the house as soon as you turn 18" and in that moment I thought to myself 'do you not expect me to?' it never crossed my mind she didn't want to go
I just want to first of all leave this TERRIBLE household. I have a feeling I'm whatever path I choose I'll be better off by my own
I could be a better Christian by myself, I know it's my dad not applying the principles correctly
But I could also be who I want to be
I want to find me
But I feel so selfish
I don't know what to do
That is my story so far
My story nobody knows about
I couldn't shake off my existential mood today so I decided I've had enough and wrote it down
I don't want to check for typos bc I don't think any to read everything I typed in fear I'll back out so hopefully you guys understood
Thank you for being the first to ever listen to me.
Hopefully you won't be the last and hopefully I make it out alive bc sometimes I think irs better to just not exist that way I won't deal with this
But I must
This is my cry for help
My biggest fear is having someone see right through me, simultaneously, it's what I want to happen to me the most.

2020.05.09 02:37 bariiiiiq I think it's bullying to post pictures of random guys wearing the fedora

I'm anti neckbeard/ creepy behaviour and love this sub etc but please hear me out. I understand that even the term neckbeard represents a physical denigration, but the purpose of it is to highlight the distinction between the sexual entitlement and physical demands of many virtual creeps vs their personal hygiene and upkeep.
Posting pictures of actual guys, who many be a little nerdy, a little overweight, wearing fedoras but with no history of neck-beard behaviour is bullying. It's mean to immortalise these guys as the quintessential creeps (yes, they are actual people with names and loved ones) when we've never even seen their private correspondence, let alone missteps. Stop screenshotting random guys pictures on fb/dating sites unless they've exhibited creepy behaviour.
Neckbeard is as neckbeard does.

EDIT:: I have never defended men in my life before, this is a first so mods pls don't ban me

2020.04.12 01:21 rabint Passed the SAA-C01 exam. Tips, gratitude and more

Passed the SAA-C01 exam! As soon as I finished, I thought of this tribe - you all. Thank you!! You all are awesome. [Edit - just found out I got 926]
For starter, you guys (and gals) led me to Stephane Maarek's ( stephanemaarek) course and practice tests from Jon Bonso ( jon-bonso) on UDemy. I stuck to them and they got me through.
I tried a few others resources, but I say these two are the gold standard for SAA-C01 certification. They are like a shot of whisky, others are like a crateful of beer. I like my beer, but nothing like the punch of whisky.
THIS IS A LONG POST, SO READ THIS IF NOTHING ELSE
Although "Solution Architecture" sounds very big and important and like something you would master after years of experience, it's the first certification to get started with AWS. It's more like "Introduction to AWS." Take a deep breath. You can do it, without losing too much money, your sanity, friends, pets, spouse or hair as has been rumored. IF YOU PREPARE THE RIGHT WAY.
Only a small number of the 140+ AWS services are covered, of them even a smaller number tend to be the focus, and for each exam writers clearly love some specific concepts.
That's where Stephane's course and Jon's sample exams come in. They strike a good balance between teaching the platform enough and preparing you for the exam.
There are some resources I used early on that I need not have. Forgive me because I hadn't found this group then. Now that I feel like an insider in the AWS kingdom, I can use them to deepen my understanding and to do real work.
I wrote tributes to Stephane and Jon...got pushed way down because I wrote too much.
EXAM CONTENT
Others' posts about the exam content are spot on.
https://www.reddit.com/AWSCertifications/comments/fv2sbn/passed_the_saaco1_this_morning/
https://www.reddit.com/AWSCertifications/comments/fojp8q/passed_the_solutions_architect_associate_saac01/
Questions have a short paragraph explaining the situation. Then a separate paragraph with direct, short one sentence question. Not overly tricky, but do watch out for negative in the question and important keywords that change the answer.
Negatives:
Pay attention when the question says things like "NOT correct", and "LEAST likely". As I started pondering the answers, a few times I found out that I almost forgot the negative in the question. To be safe, after deciding on an answer(s), I went back to re-read the question.
Keywords:
Look for keywords that change the answer such as "the cheapest option", or the "fastest solution".
Somebody wrote earlier that you need to know the basics of the AWS components, as well as how to put them together or configure them to ACHIEVE A CERTAIN OUTCOME (cheapest, or more reliable, or fastest speed of deploying the solution, least amount of maintenance required etc.). Very true. And it's not as hard to do as it sounds. When you know basics of two solutions, you can tell which one gives your more or less of what.
They are testing you on the five pillars mentioned in the Well Architected Framework. https://aws.amazon.com/architecture/well-architected/ . You don't have to memorize the details, but be familiar with the concepts. I read the white paper once. Useful for real world architecture too.
For example, there was a question in which they wanted "ease of deployment and management". Because it said "deployment" I had to include CloudFormation in the answer, because it helps to deploy, so I couldn't only choose the solution that merely made it easy to manage, after it's deployed. Some questions clearly tell you to choose the cheapest option, and include some language about how the tradeoff is acceptable (such as using spot instances, and it's ok to rerun the job if interrupted).
This is what I remember:
EC2 types (reserved, spot etc; user data), EBS types (cost, throughput, IO, RAID, snapshots-cross region, choose right type - for best IO, best throughput, serial read of large data, cheapest etc.), instance store (when preserved, when suitable as local/temporary cache; this is the fastest storage you can get, but not permanent), S3 & Glacier (a lot of questions, retrieval options, cost, speed, access), lots of RDS (multi AZ, read replicas, synchronous vs not, high availability, disaster recovery, RTO, RPO, read heavy vs write heavy, horizontal scalability vs vertical; RDS vs DynamoDB vs Aurora vs Redshift), DynamoDb (schema changes, latency, read consistency, DAX, can't store large files ), Security Groups, NACL, VPC, ElastiCache, ELB , AMI (cross region), Launch Configuration, ASG (cooldown etc.), Route 53 routing policies (many), EFS (one or two; they can attached to many EC2s), Encryption at rest and in transit (customer wants total control vs AWs managed), access to content only to paying customers (CF or S3 signed URL, signed cookies), active-active active-passive etc. HA/DR setup with EC2 & RDS, SQS duplicate messages, API Gateway and Lambda combination (small memory serverless job, protecting backend resources from overload), [email protected], web hosting using S3, object based vs file storage, VPC endpoint, PrivateLink, Egress Only Gateway, Nat Gateway, Elastic Beanstalk (one), Fargate (one), AWS resources suited for Data warehousing/OLAP/OLTP/Business Intelligence/clickstream data/BigData.
I don't think there was anything Stephane doesn't cover.
FREEBIES
These are freebies others have mentioned, just look for keywords:
Redis - to do authentication use REDIS auth
MQ - proprietary messaging queue (vs. AWS's own, SQS)
CloudWatch EC2 metrics- memory usage not part of it, need custom metrics.
CloudFormation - can help enforce best practices.
Elastic Beanstalk- A developer wants to quickly deploy code without having to setup the infrastructure, then use this. Don't confuse with Lambda. With Lambda there is really no infrastructure for you to worry about and it's for short running code that runs many times on a trigger . Beanstalk actually creates pre configured environment for you; it's not serverless.
PREPARATION
Like others have suggested, I recommend going through Stephane's course once, doing his sample test, doing one or two of Jon's tests, noting your weak areas and going back to Stephane's course and the presentation. Then do Jon's tests. In between you can look at some FAQs (EC2, S3), read the Well Architected Framework, and use Jon's tutorialdojo for short tests.
That's not what I did. I took a winded route to certification (explained later).
I created AWS account in Dec 2019, but really started learning in mid January. In mid Febraury, I decided to go for the certification, scheduled the exam for Mar 22. I went through a rollercoaster of two test centers closures thanks to the virus, and SAA-C01 coming close to expiring (Mar 22), so stopped preparing.
Then AWS extended the exam's end date and opened up home testing! By beginning of April I guesstimate around 60 hours total of preparation. Without all the distractions and false starts I had , if you have IT background, you can probably do it with much less preparation.
What really mattered was Stephane's course and Jon's sample tests. I had spent 15-20 hours with other material before February when I got to this group.
Then I spent 25-30 hours with Stephane's course, 4-5 hours with Jon's tests and tutorialdojo (did them the last two weeks). Went to sources recommended by you all like a few AWS FAQs (EC2, S3), but not all the way through, and quickly read Well Architected Framework white paper- for a grand total of may be 3-4 hours.
I often listened to Stephane's videos while commuting so some of it was already in my head when I sat down with the course at home. Did may be two thirds of the labs with him using free AWS account. I took notes in a google doc, a method that works really well for me. Anytime Stephane said "popular exam question" I noted with a "++".
I often went back to previous videos and watched them in anywhere from x1.25 to x2.0 speed. Found out that x2.0 was way over my brain's learning speed, LOL but I used it when I wanted to skip through a portion, but wasn't sure if I would miss something I had forgotten. Once in a while I would go through some of his PDF slides, a fantastic summary of the course.
I did Stephane's sample test two weeks before the test. Jon's two tests and some tutorialdojo quizzes a week before (lousy, 72 and 70). The day of the exam, I did the third Jon's test , got 87%. I should have done Jon's exams earlier.
MY BACKGROUND
Before I started looking into AWS in Dec of last year, I had solid IT fundamentals - meaning TCP/IP, RAID, programing languages, SQL, disk I/O, throughput, RPO, RTO, load balancing, basics of virtualization, HA/DR architecture etc. were not new to me, although I did not remember all details.
I've been in IT for 2 decades. First decade I spent being very technical deploying applications like BMC Remedy at large companies. A lot of travel to marquee US companies, a lot of on-premise architecture, installation, configuration, deployment, integration experience with enterprise apps, web servers, compute, storage, networks (load balancing, firewalls), programming (in Remedy's language, Perl, C, PL SQL, shell scripts,...), network/system management tools etc.
The second decade I joined one of the big 4 US consulting companies and I have been less hands on, focusing on IT Service Management best practices, Data Analytics and have project/program/product manager roles etc., but I frequently work with application and infrastructure architects, or lead process automation in tools, and occasionally write code too. Managed one highly available private cloud deployment across three data centers where I learned a lot of High Availability and Disaster Recovery. I have been a swiss army knife - whatever the client needed me for to achieve a goal.
WHY AWS?
Ok, what's below is not why you came to this group, but you get it for free any way. If you have job interview coming up at AWS, do read.
Late last year, I was considering a second act for my career. ITSM and project/program management etc.- been there, done that, don't find too much joy in them any more, so I first started learning Machine Learning/Data Science (Andrew Ng is a great educator), learned Python at DataCamp.com. Loved it all, still love it.
In December I looked into public cloud, created AWS account, played around for a few hours. On a whim I applied to a few jobs at AWS.
They called me in January for a Sr. Solution Architect job, and I said holy cow, is this happening or what, somebody pinch me, get out of here! That's when it got real.
The recruiter said I could learn AWS and get certified after I join. They just needed the right person with the right background. Sounded cool and I knew I could totally do cloud architecture and I would love doing it.
I had a technical phone screening that went well. I answered all questions, which were not very deep but wide, covering compute, storage, networking, programming etc. None on AWS. There are tons of questions from other candidates on the web, plus I am pretty strong on IT fundamentals (I do things like code in 8088 Assembly language - once - just for fun, setup a RAID at home).
Within an hour they sent email saying they wanted to do full day on-site interview (BTW, their recruiters are awesome. For the most part). Sweeet. I was on cloud 9.
AWS has a peculiar hiring process. They have "leadership principles" that they want you to learn about and describe instances from your career when you exhibited them. Might sound corny, but I think not. They make a lot of sense and explain why AWS and Amazon have been runaway successes. I had heard of some phone screening or on site interviews focusing solely or mostly on these behavioral questions.
They also sent me a simple scenario of a customer wanting to take a LAMP stack from on premise to AWS, and asked me to architect and present a solution.
To prepare, I learned about the leadership principles, wrote down examples from my career. To get ready for technical stuff and to architect the customer solution, I bought SYBEX AWS SAA Study Guide by (Ben Piper and David Clinton). Good but may be a little out of date, and not necessary for the exam. I spent may be 5-6 hours total reading a few chapters, doing some labs.
I tried Cloud Academy free for a week then paid for it. They have a SAA-C01 course, very very good but also very very long - 60 hours. I watched this interesting video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t0AP1kO0do. It sounds like Kindergarten now.
I thought of pushing out the interview by a week, cramming and getting SAA-C01 done in two weeks, so I could show up for the on site interview with the certification on hand to prove how much of my awesomeness I would bring to AWS, but the recruiter said that wouldn't necessarily change anything. Sounded like they just needed a person with "The Right Stuff" if you know what I mean.
The first week of Feb, I had 6 back to back one hour interviews and one hour of solution presentation on site. I haven't had so much fun in a while! My kind of people and my kind of subject. I just love the idea of putting cloud resources together like pieces of a puzzle to achieve technical/business goals, and then seeing the solution come alive auto-magically! You imagine and it comes alive in minutes. Your Alladin in the cloud.
Most of the questions were behavioral though (leadership principles), very light (<5%) on technical questions. The most technical I remember is having to describe how I would troubleshoot an application that's reported to be slow. I know how to troubleshoot through the layers and conversation led to reviewing processes running on the app server.
He asked how and I said start with ps such as "ps -ef" or with other switches (this one is just etched in my memory). I had no issues with the few technical questions, mostly not about such obscure details, but just about high level understanding of application stacks.
I had some cues that a number of interviewers thought the interview had gone well, and the presentation as well. I had taken some advice from a colleague who is into communication, and thought the behavioral part went fine. I thought I had a pretty good shot.
I read wrong. Totally. They said no. Wouldn't tell me why, which I hear is standard practice for them. The recruiter said something like I was highly qualified (in some manner of unclear things or other), but at this time they decided not to go forward with my candidacy for this role but that she would be happy to send my resume to other recruiters for other AWS jobs.
In a way sounded not to bad. My skills and past roles run the gamut, so I can fit many roles, but they were not forthcoming about which kinds they thought I was fit for, after both they and I had invested so much time doing this song and dance. I could have been directly referred to other roles, but that didn't happen, which made me think the behavioral parts of the interviews might not have gone well.
I had talked to several HR type people during the process. I called them and one of them was nice and finally told me that the note on my record said that they concluded that I was more like a program or engagement manager.
That's some of what I do now, granted. But cloud solution architecture is what excites me, dang it! I have the background. I have deep and wide understanding of all things IT. I have coded in 8088 Assembly language (said that already right), in C... I have installed/configured all sorts of OS, database, architected solutions with load balancing, fault tolerance, written integration scripts. Some of it is from a while ago, but fundamentals are the same. And I have been handling customers well, all my career.
I asked if I fell short on the "leadership principles", which I assume would make one unfit in their eyes for any role like you don't belong there at all, but she said I did fine by them.
In hindsight, I believe they got the sense that I was not technical enough to be a SA. I disagree, but I didn't do a good job of establishing otherwise.
All technical questions throughout the process, I answered well. The only reason I can think of for them to doubt my technical ability is my resume, which was heavy on process/service improvement etc., especially for recent years. Even for the first decade of my career, to shorten the resume I had taken out many technical details, and I didn't adapt it before applying to AWS.
Another highsight - like many of us do, I chose to focus on positive signals from the on site interview and conveniently neglected negative ones. I didn't seem to click well with one of the interviewers. He might have been the one they call the "bar raiser." From the beginning, he seemed to act/talk differently than others. Still can't figure him out.
The yearning to pursue cloud architecture and/or Machine Learning/Data Science role is still there. Both fascinate me. I will make it happen.
Going back to the saga of certification - AWS the company didn't work out for me for now, but I like AWS the platform any way. I have the AWS bug, so mid February, I signed up for the SAA-C01 test in March. You heard the rest.
I recently hired a professional resume writer and have redone my resume to bring out the technical roles/experiences (and other good updates). Worth the cost.
That's a lot of me. Let's talk about the real heroes in this story.
TRIBUTE TO STEPHANE AND JON
Stephane, you can teach man, you're an awesome educator. My dad and father in law happen to be renowned teachers in their fields, so when I see a good one, I know. Like them your delivery brings a vibe that makes people want to learn.
I can tell that you put a lot of thought into designing the course. AWS has put the best of last 70 years of IT in the cloud. In 14 hours (I skipped videos labeled SAA-C02) you manage to teach the platform and get people ready for the exam.
The downloadable presentation is a great reference too. As I said earlier, your course is a shot of whisky, others I tried were like a crate full of beer. Thank you, you're an awesome guru and I am a grateful shishya (disciple)! [emoji with two hands together in gratitude]
And Jon, the sample exams were terrific (please do consider matching the wordiness of the real test questions, on the short side). They let me know how much I sucked and why I sucked. I failed once, passed once with the least score possible, 72, becoming the butt of my kids' jokes.
I tried the third one on the morning of the exam and I passed with 87%, which is around what I am expecting for my exam result [edit - I got 926]. I tried Cloud Academy test the day before and got 50%, nowhere near my actual performance in the exam.
And thanks for giving me access to tutorialdojo. I can see that you are super active in the AWS certification community, and always quick to jump in and help people. And turns out in the LinkedIn group too. That's some dedication and thank you for being generous with your time with the community and for putting together great resources.

2020.03.28 03:59 DavidMoyes Long Post: The "Alexander Romances" Plagiarism Charge Against the Qur'an and Islam!

Short prefix:
I'm no historian or writer. Haven't really spent too much time searching into this Alexander Romances debate either. Sudden bursts into looking into a peoples or a nation's history intrigue me before it dies down. This is one of those bursts.
The point of this post is I want to conclude for myself how all pieces of evidence stack up against one another and would like to weigh them up in light of this serious charge against the origins of the story of Dhul Qarnayn in the Qur'an. I'm not here to educate you so please keep this in mind when reading this post and comments from myself on here. I'm actually here to be educated for once on a matter such as this.
Introduction:
Abdullah Sameer and others have claimed the Qur'an blatantly plagiarises from the story of Alexander the Great. They cite some supposed authorises on this matter (Kevin van Bladel & Sean W. Anthony to name a few) so as to back their cases but they in the same breath deny what other supposed authorities (Brandon Wheeler & Taha Soomro so as to also name a few) have to say on the matter themselves.
I will share what I believe to be what these people's arguments are and a bit of my own research on the matter. I would hope people fact check what I present and correct me where I am wrong.
Abdullah Sameer and his pieces of evidence:
Abdullah Sameer simply says to easily prove the Qur'an is wrong we need to follow these premises he lays out here:
  1. Dhul Qarnayn is a righteous believer.
  2. Dhul Qarnayn is Alexander the Great.
  3. Alexander the Great is a pagan.
His evidence for premise number 1 is the Qur'an. I easily accept this. Now premise number 2 is where I disagree with Abdullah.
This is because of the pieces of evidence he brings forth in the remainder of the video are weak in my opinion.
He essentially cites Kevin van Bladel's paper and states from it, he concludes that 'either the Qur'an and the Alexander Romances share a similar source or that the Qur'an copies the story of the Romances', then points to a coin depicting Alexander as having two horns followed up with recent excavations shared by Sean W. Anthony supposedly of Alexander the Great having two horns, mentions Sean's opinion of it being an 'open and shut case for a while' then tries to claim early Muslims all agreed it was Alexander the Great.
My analysis of Abdullah's shreds of evidence - Evidence 1:
The first piece of evidence Abdullah shared was Kevin van Bladel's paper (linked above & starts at page 175). When I was reading the paper, not attentively as I was busy, I found the main source which Kevin uses to contrast similarities of Alexander Romances with the Qur'an is the Syriac Alexander legend (also known as Neshana).
I find this remarkable to use as proof because in the same paper we find Neshana's earliest date is between the dates 628 - 630 ad...
Using this information, too much to repeat entirely here, he has persuasively argued that the Alexander Legend was composed just after 628, perhaps in 630, the year in which Heraclius restored the cross to Jerusalem...
...
His thesis is that the Syriac Legend of Alexander was composed “shortly after 628” (i.e. in 629 or 630) by an inhabitant of Amida or Edessa, or some other place near to those, in support of Heraclius.

If this is the case, then how can this possibly be used as evidence against the Qur'an? I'll explain why I mean this.
Surah al-Kahf was revealed to Prophet Muhammad all at once just before the hijra to Medina. It was revealed at best just before 622ad (according to Farid) with the hijra to Medina happening at 622ad.
This would mean the Neshana (Syriac Alexander Romances) which if we take the date shared by Kevin to be accurate in that it was composed “shortly after 628” (i.e. in 629 or 630) would make the stories in the Neshana a lot more likely to be influenced from the Qur'an and not the other way around.
Now what Abdullah doesn't want you to know in all this, is his confidence about Alexander the Great being Dhul Qarnayn was being shattered bit by bit online on Twitter after he released that video in light of these pieces of evidence.
For example, one of the apparent authorities against the charge of the Qur'an copying the Neshana is Taha Soomro whose paper in response to Kevin van Bladel you can find here.
Taha Soomro's conclusion in his paper (on page 20) states:

The Syriac Legend of Alexander and the Qurʾānic account of Dhū-l Qarnayn do not share a direct relationship between them, but instead independently draw upon a shared tradition found in the Late Antique Near East. Evidence against Van Bladel’s thesis, that the Qurʾān is essentially retelling the Neṣḥānā, are several. Firstly, one sees that the Syriac account and the Qurʾānic one are different in many places, even pertaining to specific events, descriptions and turns of phrase that Van Bladel has previously posited as a similarity. These differences point against a direct Qurʾānic borrowing of the Neṣḥānā.
Similarly, the language of the two texts provide additional reasons to believe that the two texts do not rely upon each other. Finally, the dating of the two texts make a direct dependence of one story upon the other especially difficult. These facts, in addition to the lack of demonstrative evidence provided by both Van Bladel’s and Tesei’s arguments for the Qurʾān drawing on the Syriac account, forces one to consider the possibility that the Qurʾān and the Neṣḥānā are independent witnesses to a common tradition.

So to put it short. The first piece of evidence Abdullah states is not really evidence. It is more so evidence that the Neshana is influenced by the Qur'an than the other way around. When presented with this paper, this was Abdullah's response on Twitter in which he now argues "The two [Surah al-Kahf and the Neshana] are dated too closely to convincingly argue one way or another."
This seems like an admission of defeat by Abdullah. In that, he realised the charge of the Qur'an copying the Neshana is more likely the other way around and is saving face arguing 'well, the dates are close so we can't know and argue either way'. This makes a change from his confident statements earlier in his video where he lays out his premises.
So by admission. Abdullah now says he can not convincingly argue that the Qur'an is influenced by the Neshana due to the Qur'anic revelation (pre 622ad) being before the Neshana's supposed composition (at best 630 ad). This would mean his first piece of evidence he gives for Dhul Qarnayn being Alexander the Great has been refuted and by Abdullah's admission not a convincing one.
My analysis of Abdullah's shreds of evidence - Evidence 2-3:
The second pieces of evidence that Abdullah brings to the table is a coin and some excavations shared by Sean and both of these are supposed to be of Alexander the Great due to Alexander the Great in these two pieces of evidence was depicted as having two horns.
I simply consider these two as a weak argument for two robust reasons.

Number 1: Even if Alexander the Great had horns, this does not prove anything conclusively.

For let me just make mention of something that may interest you. Alexander we know was fond of someone, and who was this someone? This, someone, was the Great King of Persia, Cyrus. Cyrus is also depicted as having two horns. After all, horns were also a familiar symbol of power in the kingdoms of Mesopotamia. What does all this mean? It means Alexander could have donned two horns for several different reasons none of which tells us he alone is Alexander the Great.
These reasons could be either he was pagan and he was simply was wearing the horns of Ammon which were a symbol of the Egyptian deity Ammon (also spelt Amun or Amon), or he felt immersed by the symbol of power in Mesopotamia and wanted horns to symbolise his power over the east and west or... he wanted to be like his idol Cyrus the Great.
But what evidence do we have of Cyrus having two horns? The relief of Cyrus the Great near his tomb in Pasargadae, the former capital of the Persian Empire.
What's even more interesting is Cyrus' horns has three pointy things above the two horns. Why is this relevant?
Well, the Qur'an describes three of Dhul Qarnayns journeys, that's why. The last being the most significant of them all. The three journeys are journeys he made to the west, the east, and finally in a land that is described to be between two mountains.
Also, I'd like to point out that Cyrus was also loved by Jews, I mean seriously, he is the only person who is not a Jew in their Hebrew Bible that they called by the name "Messiah".
This is because Cyrus the Great was the one who took out Babylonia and sent Jews back to the land of Cannon. So keep in mind this is how Cyrus would have been familiar with the Jews and Christians as he was made mention of in their books.
Keep in mind also, one of the reasons for the revelation of Surah al-Kahf was that the Jews asked the Prophet Muhammad three questions, one was about a person the Qur'an later called Dhul Qarnayn, why would the Jews ask about this person if this person never had a huge significance in their (Jewish) history?

Number 2: Ali ibn Talib denied Dhul-Qarnayn had horns & it means something else.

As Farid makes mention in his video response I shared above, Dhul-Qarnayn could simply be called that not because of what he wore, but according to Ali ibn Talib, his name comes from him being attacked or attacking the Dhul-Qarnayn (meaning the two sides of his head) probably in reference to his expansion in the west and east. Farid sources four sources of these reports from Ali Ibn Talib below:
  1. Musanaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 6/346
  2. Al-Ahaad wal Mathani by Ibn Abi Asim 141
  3. Jami' Bayan Al-Ilm by Ibn Abd Al-Barr 464
  4. Al Mashyakha Al Baghdadiyya by Abi Tahir Al Silafi 27
So this is why evidence 2 and 3 of Abdullah are not convincing at all alongside evidence number 1.
Also, I'd like to mention Sean W. Anthony hastily saying it is an "open and shut case and has been for quite a while" doesn't make it any more true and he is no authority on Islamic studies so appealing to him isn't going to convince a Muslim. Sean making a consensus where there isn't any by even Western scholars is silly on his part. Talking about making a consensus where there isn't any. Let's move onto the final pieces of evidence Abdullah brings forth where he tries to show a consensus among Islamic scholars where there isn't any, sounds like Sean.
My analysis of Abdullah's shreds of evidence - Evidence 4:
So Abdullah here is attempting to prove many early Islamic scholars all believed that Dhul Qarnanyn was Alexander or something along those lines. This isn't going to end well. I've already shared 4 reports from Ali ibn Talib who states DQ didn't even have horns and since apparently Alexander had, Ali's report already flies in the face against apparent forcing of "consensus" among early Muslims. Something which I find is a common trend ex-Muslims like Abdullah seem to proclaim. This false consensus is akin to the site Islam issue trying to force an early consensus on the earth being flat among Muslim scholars with help from Mod Optimus Prime both are which absolute rubbish.
Nonetheless, what proof does Abdullah bring forth?
He first claims Ibn Ishaq (761 CE) in his Sirat believed DQ was Alexander and that he described him of Egyptian and Greek origins.
Now, upon simple study, this is a hilarious claim, as Farid shows in his video response that Ibn Ishaq was actually quoting foreigners that said DQ was from Egypt, not only that, but these same foreigners say DQ's name was actually "Murziban ibn Murzibah al-Nuyani" (I've probably spelt that wrong but oh well). Now I may be wrong, but that doesn't sound like Alexander the Great son of Phillip to me Abdullah!
Also, another opinion Ibn Ishaq shared was him providing a quote from Umar that DQ was an angel. What's even funnier is Ibn Ishaq didn't even make a claim himself, he was simply relaying opinions. And in the end, he says Allah knows best from which of these he was if any of them.
The second "early" source that Abdullah provides is Tafseer al-Jalalayn (1459 CE) and this Tafseer al-Jalalayn is not proof since it is a linguistic Tafseer. Meaning this Tafseer we do not go to for textual interpretations but to address grammar of the Qur'an. So even if al-Jalalayn says DQ's name was Alexander, this is not something set in stone neither did he say early Muslims believed it.
The third "early" source that Abdullah provides is the opinion of an Indian scholar Shah Walihullah (1763 CE) and I'm being quite serious here. I don't even know who this guy is (no offence). Notice the difference between the dates of these "early" scholars who say DQ is Alexander, shouldn't that tell you how much heart Abdullah has put into this?
Finally, he quotes another "early" Muslim source who is actually contemporary. That is Yusaf Ali (1934). You probably know him as one of the translations you could select on Qur'an.com or other Qur'an websites. He is a famous translator of the Qur'an who says DQ is Alexander but you could easily argue his opinion was influenced by orientalists and it's just that, an opinion.
I could do the same thing Abdullah does and post Tafseer opinions of commentators who don't say a word as to who DQ is or say it is other than Alexander but I'll save myself the bother of wasting most of my time looking them up. Just by the dates alone, you can see Abdullah's claims about "early Muslims" believing it is Alexander is BS. Just by listening to Ali ibn Talib's opinion, you can see the opinions differed.
Arguments others could make/Appendix:

The Jewish historian Josephus (37-100 CE) mentioned in his 2 books legendary stories of Alexander that were known to the Jews of the 1st century. In his first book, "The Antiquities of the Jews", he mentions that the tribes of Magog are called the Scythians by the Greeks. In his second book, "The Wars of the Jews", he further details that these people are held behind a wall of iron that has been built by Alexander the Great.
The Antiquities of the Jews, Book I, Ch6, v1 --- "Magog founded those that from him were named Magogites, but who are by the Greeks called Scythians."
The Wars Of The Jews, Book VII, Ch7, v4 ---- "Now there was a nation of the Alans, which we have formerly mentioned some where as being Scythians and inhabiting at the lake Meotis. This nation about this time laid a design of falling upon Media, and the parts beyond it, in order to plunder them; with which intention they treated with the king of Hyrcania; for he was master of that passage which king Alexander [the Great] shut up with iron gates. This king gave them leave to come through them; so they came in great multitudes, and fell upon the Medes unexpectedly, and plundered their country."
This shows that local folklore already contained the basic identical parts of the AlexandeDhul-Qarnayn story almost 6 centuries before the story found in the Qur'an.

Now, this was interesting when I first read it. When one can no longer present the Qur'an copying from Alexander romances found in the Neshana, people are quick to point out that some texts like Josephus (37-100 CE) mentioning Alexander "shutting the iron gate" against the Scythians (Magog) and that this is where the Qur'an mixes Alexander with God and Magog I find that also a strech.
When looking into this briefly I came across something interesting from Wikipedia:
Josephus [37–100 AD], in his Antiquities of the Jews xi, 8, 5 tells of a visit that Alexander is purported to have made to Jerusalem, where he met the high priest Jaddua and the assembled Jews, and was shown the book of Daniel in which it was prophesied that some one of the Greeks would overthrow the empire of Persia. Alexander believed himself to be the one indicated, and was pleased. The pertinent passage in Daniel would seem to be VIII. 3–8 which tells of the overthrow of the two-horned ram by the one-horned goat, the one horn of the goat being broken in the encounter ...The interpretation of this is given further ... "The ram which thou sawest that had the two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia. And the rough he-goat is the king of Greece." This identification is accepted by the church fathers...
Essentially, what I found was this whole story is an addition to the Alexander romances so it was taken from somewhere else. It wasn't Alexander who shut the gate. This website "Alexander the Great visits Jerusalem" relates stories shared by Josephus and declares them false:
Most scholars agree that the following story, told by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in his Jewish antiquities 11.317-345, is not true. One argument is that Alexander is shown a book that was not yet written. Another argument is that the story is a bit too good to be true: the Samarians, the eternal rivals of the Jews, blacken the Jews and get permission to build a temple of their own, Alexander visits Jerusalem, understands that he owes everything to the God of the Jews, allows them the privilege to live according to their ancestral customs and behaves rather unkind towards the Samarians. If a Jew in the second century BCE were to invent a story, he would write something along these lines.
On closer inspection, however, we may notice some odd details. In the first place, the Samaritans are allowed to keep their temple: not exactly something a Jew would invent, and in fact a plausible punishment for the Jewish refusal to send soldiers. In the second place, in fact, Alexander gives the Jews no privileges at all: everything he grants the Jews, had already been granted to them by the Persian kings. This was Alexander's usual policy.
In the third place, the idea that Alexander had had a vision in which the God of the Jews played an important role is just too incredible to be invented: everyone knew that Alexander claimed to be the son of the Egyptian god Ammon. Nobody would invent a special link to the Jewish God. The easiest explanation is that Alexander did indeed sacrifice to the God of the Jews.
Another aspect that deserves to be mentioned is Alexander's demand for auxiliaries and the presents the Jews formerly had sent to the Persian government. This matches the demand made by Alexander to Darius that he would address him as the master of the Persian possessions.
These two tweets in response to Sean W. Anthony tweet about Josephus was also an interesting read.
It reads pretty much (I added a few words):
"This is actually a piece of good evidence that the two personalities of Alexander & Cyrus are mixed in these stories & histories by Josephus or writers of its Alexander Romance.
Alexander did not have any contact with Medes. The Medes kingdom was absorbed into the Persian empire by Cyrus more than 200 years before Alex.
It was Cyrus who fought with Scythians & died in the war. The raid of Medes by Scythians (Magog) happened before the Cyrus Kingdom. The story is narrated in Herodotus. The separation between Alexander & Josephus is 300 years and with Alexander Romance is 800 years. So the personalities are mixed as well as the story is what most scholars see as false."
Conclusion:
Abdullah has failed to prove premise two of his argument that DQ is Alexander the Great. His arguments were weak, inconclusive, and he himself admitted at one point one of his evidence, the biggest one, in fact, was not convincing. In this case, we can't move onto premise three. But I would like to know the proof for premise three. If Alex is a pagan, is this down to witness testimony? How reliable are these Abdullah? Could it not be a result of chinese whispers? Why should we believe this testimony, Abdullah?
Premise three is a question I'd like to get more proof for.
What we find, however, is the Neshana takes influence from the Qur'an and ascribes it to Alexander romances. Like how Josephus had taken influence from what is more than likely Cyrus' story and ascribes it to Alexander romances too. As a result of this, a legend was attached to Gog and Magog by the time of the Roman period, that the Gates of Alexander was erected by Alexander the Great to repel the tribe.
But this can't be the case and it safe to say that Josephus has mistaken Cyrus for because Alexander did not have any contact with Medes. The Medes kingdom was absorbed into the Persian empire by Cyrus more than 200 years before Alex. It was Cyrus who actually fought with Scythians (Magog) & died in the war. The raid of Medes by Scythians (Magog) happened before the Cyrus Kingdom. The story is narrated in Herodotus.
Meaning, the two personalities of Alexander & Cyrus are mixed in these stories & histories by Josephus or writers of its Alexander Romance. Even scholars say that the stories Josephus' relates to Alexander are not true as I've shown above.
Wow, this took a bit of time to type up.
I hope I have made no mistakes. I'm about to go off. I shall see what responses this thread gets when I come back on later. Please check as much of this as you can to see if it is true. If there is anything untrue, feel free to put it in the comments I shall check it out later. Educate me and I've educated you a little you're welcome.
